After the start of the First World War, the neutral Swiss government and the International Committee of the Red Cross began to negotiate the humanitarian exchange of wounded prisoners of war. Prisoners with injures so severe that they could not rejoin the war effort were repatriated by hospital trains that crossed Switzerland throughout 1915. Albert Smith, the Alpine Club, and the Invention of Mountaineering in Mid-Victorian Britain
On August 12,1851, Albert Smith, a middle-aged journalist and entertainer, reached the summit of Mont Blanc with three Oxford students and sixteen guides. Smith and his companions were not the first people to climb Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps.
