Factors Influencing Racial Discrimination and Prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder Among Black Canadian Youths
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition with far-reaching implications for youth well-being and society. This paper examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms consistent with probable MDD and their association with self-reported experiences of racial discrimination within the Black youth population in Canada. This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. Questionnaires were administered vi…

Public health unit funding per capita and seasonal influenza vaccination among youth and adults in Ontario, Canada in 2013/2014 and 2018/2019
BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccines are crucial in reducing the risk of influenza symptoms. We aimed to: (1) estimate the association between public health unit (PHU) funding per capita and influenza vaccination among individuals aged 12 and older in Ontario in 2013/2014 and 2018/2019 and (2) determine whether any observed associations were heterogeneous across household income groups, gender and age categories. METHODS: Cross-sectional studies were c…
Correlates of low resilience and physical and mental well-being among Black youths in Canada
In this study, the Black youth participants reported relatively low resilience scores. Employment, physical health, and mental health status were factors that contributed to low resilience. Further studies are needed to examine the causal link between resilience and its dynamic effect on health outcomes among Black youth. More interventions are needed to make mental health services accessible to Black youth in a more culturally sensitive way with…
Mental Health of Immigrant Children and Adolescents (6–17 Years) in Canada
No significant differences in overall mental health status were evident between immigrant and non-immigrant children and adolescents in Canada but differences exist in emotional problems and hyperactivity. Sex has an influence on immigrant child mental health that varies depending on the specific mental health indicator
Investigating the association between income inequality in youth and deaths of despair in Canada
BACKGROUND: Deaths due to suicide, drug overdose and alcohol-related liver disease, collectively known as 'deaths of despair', have been markedly increasing since the early 2000s and are especially prominent in young Canadians. Income inequality has been linked to this rise in deaths of despair; however, this association has not yet been examined in a Canadian context, nor at the individual level or in youth. The study objective was to examine th…
Income Inequality and Bullying Victimization and Perpetration
Previous research indicates that the disproportionate distribution of income within society is associated with aggression and violence. Although research has been conducted identifying the relationship between income inequality and bullying victimization and perpetration, little is known about possible mediators. We investigated the association between income inequality and bullying perpetration and victimization among adolescents participating i…
Developing a Socioeconomic Status Index for Chronic Disease Prevention Research in Canada
Capturing socioeconomic inequalities in relation to chronic disease is challenging since socioeconomic status (SES) encompasses many aspects. We constructed a comprehensive individual-level SES index based on a broad set of social and demographic indicators (gender, education, income adequacy, occupational prestige, employment status) and examined its relationship with smoking, a leading chronic disease risk factor. Analyses were based on baselin…
Multilevel Modeling of Health Inequalities at the Intersection of Multiple Social Identities in Canada
Health inequities in Canada are pervasive. Intersectional theory and novel quantitative methods can be used to understand health inequities. Drawing on a sample of adults from the 2015 and 2016 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study uses multilevel analysis individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA) to examine the intersectional effect of race, sex, income and immigration status on perceived health and perceived mental he…

The Association Between Fitness Test Scores and Musculoskeletal Injury in Police Officers
A police officer's career is hazardous and physically demanding. In order to perform occupational tasks effectively and without injury, officers require adequate physical abilities. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between scores on several fitness tests and musculoskeletal injury in a group of municipal police officers. This retrospective study used existing data to examine the relationship between risk of injury and fit…
Is Farm Milk a Risk Factor for Sarcoidosis? The Role of Farm Residence, Unpiped Water and Untreated Milk in Sarcoidosis
Objective : Sarcoidosis is thought to be an aberrant immune response to environmental agents, with rural living as a risk factor. We aimed to determine if farm living, consumption of farm (untreated) milk, or untreated water increased the risk of sarcoidosis. Methods: In a case-referent design, patients aged 18−60 with pulmonary sarcoidosis together with referents with other chronic respiratory disease, diagnosed 1999−2005 in Alberta, Canada, wer…
Pesticide Use and Asthma in Alberta Grain Farmers
A study of the respiratory health of grain farmers in Alberta, Canada was carried out in March 2002. Two populations were identified: members, in 1983, of a province-wide farm organisation, and grain farmers registered with the provincial agriculture department. A telephone interview addressed pesticide use (using pre-circulated trade names), chronic disease and respiratory symptoms. Pesticide ingredients were identified from provincial crop prot…

Social, Demographic, and Health Outcomes in the 10 Years Following Adolescent Depression
Effectiveness of cough etiquette maneuvers in disrupting the chain of transmission of infectious respiratory diseases
All the assessed cough etiquette maneuvers, performed as recommended, do not block droplets expelled as aerosol when coughing. This aerosol can penetrate profound levels of the respiratory system. Practicing these assessed primary respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette maneuvers would still permit direct, indirect, and/or airborne transmission and spread of IRD, such as influenza and Tuberculosis. All the assessed cough etiquette maneuvers, as recom…
Gender differences in antiretroviral treatment outcomes of HIV patients in rural Uganda
Gender differences in treatment outcomes of 305 persons living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) in Kabarole district, western Uganda, were evaluated. The primary treatment outcome was virological suppression defined as HIV-1 RNA viral load (VL) 400 copies/ml) as compared to males (odds ratio 2.14, 95% confidence interval 0.99-4.63, p=0.05). While females had a significantly higher baseline CD4 cell count at initiation of treatmen…

Do the determinants of health differ between people living in the community and in institutions
