Sitio Chivacabe, An Early Paleoindian Site in Western Highland Guatemala
Paleoindian research in Central America remains a nascent field of study even as significant progress has been made nearby in Mexico and further south in Panama and much of South America. Only a single Paleoindian site, Los Tapiales, has been excavated in Guatemala. This research investigated a previously recorded site that contains Pleistocene megafaunal remains and from which a fluted lanceolate projectile point has been recovered. Although Los…
Alluvial Stratigraphy and the Search for Preceramic Open-air Sites in Highland Mesoamerica
The Preceramic archaeological record of highland Mesoamerica is biased toward rockshelter sites. We advocate more fieldwork in streamside settings, where open-air sites are likely to be found for reasons related both to the systemic context of hunter-gatherer lifeways and to the geoarchaeological context of site burial and preservation. Predicting site location requires attention to the peculiar nature and behavior of incised ephemeral streams (b…
Aztec period houses and terraces at Calixtlahuaca
Calixtlahuaca, a Middle–Late Postclassic site in the Toluca Valley of central Mexico, was occupied ca. a.d. 1100–1530. Our excavations reveal some of the processes involved in the creation, functions, and decay of a large hilltop urban center. At its height, the majority of the site’s surface (264 ha) was covered with residential-agricultural terraces supported by a complex water management system. House construction techniques included the use o…
Swidden Agriculture in Thetierra Fría? Evidence From Sedimentary Records in Tlaxcala
Swidden agriculture in Mesoamerica is commonly associated with the hot and humid lowlands and with small isolated communities. Charcoal-rich sediments discovered in Tlaxcala, however, suggest that it was practiced in the cold highlands in the Formative and Classic periods. The headwaters of the Xilomantla drainage incised a nine-meter deep channel shortly before 200b.c., in response to increased runoff from slopes degraded by agriculture. It was …
Chinampa Cultivation in the Basin of Mexico
Late Quaternary Clay Dune Sedimentation on the Llano Estacado, Texas
The geologic history of clay dunes of the Llano Estacada, also known as lunettes or lee-side dunes, is closely tied to the hydraulic history of the lakes and playas with which they are intimately associated. These dunes grow rapidly during periods of low lake stage and mudflat exposure, and more slowly during periods of high stage, when the sediment source, namely the lake bed and shore deposits, are greatly reduced in size. Dunes of this type ar…
Magnetic Prospection of Prehistoric Sites in an Alluvial Environment
Portable proton magnetometers were employed at a number of sites dating to the Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods at several different localities in NW and west-central Texas in an attempt to locate subsurface prehistoric features for excavation. Eight magnetic surveys were performed, resulting in the identification and recovery of several fired features, clusters of ceramics, and numerous metal objects of historical age. The results demonstrat…
