Grapevine Variety Identification—Methodological Aspects
The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the most significant fruits in global economy, today as in the past. The international modern wine industry, traditional agriculture and wild populations encompass thousands of grapevine varieties, the differences between them often imperceptible to the naked eye and therefore, necessitating the application of digital technologies. This study aimed at establishing a methodology for analyzing grapevine pips…
A Milestone Without a Road
A milestone located in Bet Ḥananya, below one of the arches of the Hadrianic High Aqueduct to Caesarea (Canal B), was subjected to a 3D scan. This technique enabled the reading of the inscription on the milestone and thereby, to date the stone to the period of the dual reign of Emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus (161–169 CE). It also became apparent that the stone marked the fourth mile station from Caesarea. This paper suggests that the m…
The Morphology of Iron Age Storage Jars and Its Relation to the Handbreadth Measure (Biblical Tefach )
In this paper we compare morphological features of three groups of Iron Age storage jars that were unearthed in several Judahite and Israelite sites. The most famous group is the royal Judahite storage jars with stamped handles (“lmlk,” “rosette,” etc.). The other two groups are the “Hippo” jars found abundantly in Israelite sites and the jars from Khirbet Qeiyafa (Judah), assigned chronologically to the early 10th century b.c.e. We scanned most …

Two Cypriot Pithoi from Late Bronze Age Tel Burna
Bronze Age trade in the Eastern Mediterranean is well attested in south Levantine archaeological research, with imported vessels generally playing a significant role in the ceramic assemblage. While the majority of these vessels are found repeatedly at many different sites, there are cases where a rare find sheds new light on the way in which trade patterns are perceived. Such is the case with two fully restored pithoi found in a Late Bronze IIB …

Archaeology in Three Dimensions
This article reviews the activities at the Computerized Archaeology Laboratory at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where techniques and ideas from computer science (e.g., computer graphics, machine learning, etc.) are integrated into archaeological research methodologies. The laboratory operates optical scanners which provide 3D digital models that are then analyzed by computer programs developed in-house. These programs address research issue…
Documentation and Analyses on the National Scale at the Israel Antiquities Authority
This article reviews the methods and tools which are used in the new digital laboratory at the Israel Antiquities Authority. In collaboration with the Computerized Archaeology Laboratory at the Hebrew University, we apply techniques and ideas from computer graphics and mathematics, and integrated them into the methodologies of archaeological research and documentation. The laboratory operates optical scanners which provide accurate 3D digital mod…

The Royal Judahite Storage Jar
The paper presents an objective, repeatable and independent computergenerated typology of the iron Age II Oval Storage Jar (OSJ), also known as the lmlk or Royal Judahite Storage Jar. It demonstrates that this jar was in use from the late 9th to the early 6th century BCe and that it was distributed beyond the confines of the Judahite administrative system. The OSJ first appeared as a local phenomenon that was limited to the Shephelah, with no par…

New Typological Analyses of Early Bronze Age Holemouth Jars from Tel Arad and Southern Sinai
A novel computerized method for the morphological typology of ceramics was applied to the assemblages of Early Bronze holemouth jars found at Tel Arad and in Southern Sinai. This analysis demonstrates, in agreement with commonly accepted conclusions, that the holemouth cooking-pots found in Arad, which were made of materials alien to the Arad environment, and the holemouth jars found in Southern Sinai cannot be differentiated by their rim morphol…
