  • Motivations for Christian conversion among rural to urban migrants in the Kathmandu Valley

    Richard Bownas•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

This article explores the rise of Christianity in urban Nepal through the lens of rural to urban migrants and their experiences. As Christianity continues its exponential growth in the Kathmandu Valley, especially among socially and culturally marginalized groups, the article provides theoretical indicators of what is driving the phenomenon. The article explores the motivations for Christian conversion through a comparative methodology: it compar…

  • Using Vignettes to Explore Caste Attitudes in Central Nepal

    Open Access•Richard Bownas•ARTICLE•HIMALAYA•2022

This study aims to explore the attitudes of young persons in Nepal toward caste using completed short stories, or 'vignettes', that imagine situations involving intercaste couples. A total of around 230 stories were gathered from 2018 to 2019. The study, conducted among Class 11 and 12 students in around a dozen schools in central Nepal, covered a mixture of rural and urban locations. The results were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Th…

  • Access after the earthquake

    Richard Bownas, Ratna Bishokarma•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2018•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 4

The earthquakes not only took thousands of lives and destroyed property and livelihoods, but their aftermath has revealed the webs of power that shape and limit the opportunities of different…

  • The upside-down roots of a transnational advocacy network

    Open Access•Richard Bownas•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

In this article, I examine a transnational advocacy network opposed to the introduction of genetically modified crops and supportive of organic agriculture in India. I argue that this network illustrates some of the consequences of 'upward oriented linkages', in which professional NGO brokers focus on constructing relationships with other professional or elite partner bodies such as donor organizations, global retailers and the English language m…

  • Lost in Transnationalism? GMOs in India and the Eclipse of Equitable Development Discourse

    Open Access•Richard Bownas•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian Development•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been at the centre of passionate debates in recent years, about their safety, their political economic impact and arguably as a litmus test for broader discourses about development. In India, this debate, focusing on Bt cotton, and more recently on Bt eggplant (brinjal), has been particularly vociferous. This article adds context to the debate by showing how rival perspectives on the role of GMOs in econ…

  • Dalits and Maoists in Nepal's civil war

    Richard Bownas, Richard A Bownas•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2015•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

This paper examines the role of Dalits in Nepal's 1996–2006 civil war (or ‘Maoist People's War’) through field research conducted in 2014 in three villages in mid-western and mid-eastern Nepal. The aim of the paper is to illuminate Dalit struggles at the village level which have gone more or less unnoticed both in academic literature and in civil society debate in metropolitan Nepal. Dalit activists in certain locations had been mobilizing under …
