The PhD Premium
In recent years, the number of PhD titles awarded has increased globally, as it did in most countries. What is the relationship between such expansion and the occupational condition of PhDs? Is there a PhD premium, that is an occupational advantage of PhD holders with respect to college graduates? In this paper, we provide empirical evidence for 20 European countries by estimating two-step models on European Labor Force Survey data (2009–2020). O…
Parents and teachers’ compensatory strategies during Covid-19 school closures
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries decided to close schools in 2020 to slow down the spread of the virus. The abrupt closure of schools required teachers and families to adapt quickly to an online setting for school activities. The literature review presented here focuses on this adaptive process, summarising research on how parents and teachers tried to curtail the potentially detrimental effects of school closure and re…
Social origin and women’s occupational careers. The role of parenthood in shaping social inequality among Italian women
This paper studies in longitudinal perspective the direct effect of social origin (DESO) on the careers of women in Italy, focusing on the role of motherhood in shaping the DESO and its pattern over the life course. Career outcomes are seen in terms of employment interruptions and of occupational status. First, the paper analyzes when the DESO appears, and how it evolves over the occupational career and the life course. Second, it investigates wh…
Job Satisfaction and Gender in Italy
The aim of this study was to propose a reliable measurement model for the concept of job satisfaction in Italy and to test its measurement invariance across gender. We used the 2003 and 2009 Italian National Statistical Office (ISTAT) Family and Social Subjects (FSS) data, containing information on 8 dimensions of job satisfaction. The best-fitting model was a four-factor one, including the dimensions of intrinsic, rewards, timing and socio-conte…
Experimental Research in Education
This work provides an assessment of the Italian experimental literature in the field of education. We review 25 RCTs completed between 2009 and 2020, analysing their alignment to the CONSORT guidelines. Our findings show that the scientific reporting is on average of good quality; however, there are areas where a significant improvement is needed. We suggest viable solutions, aimed at improving the robustness of experimental research in sociology…
The effects of an information campaign beyond university enrolment
Both parents matter. Family-based educational inequality in Italy over the second half of the 20th century
Human capital dynamics
The paper studies the geographical mobility of high-school graduates who change their residence to enrol in university in Italy, a country with deep geographical socioeconomic cleavages. While the previous literature has mostly focused on interregional mobility, we define mobility at the provincial level in order to observe both long- and short-distance movements. Our descriptive results show that students’ geographical mobility follows the distr…
Social origin and compensation patterns over the occupational career in Italy
This paper studies dynamically the direct effect of social origin on occupational destinations among men in Italy over the career. It aims at investigating the existence, the pattern over time and the heterogeneity of differences in occupational achievement related to social origins, net of education (DESO) and occupational allocation at first job. It also analyses if the change of the DESO over the career is related to the effect of specific job…
Social Class, Work-Related Incomes, and Socio-Economic Polarization in Europe, 2005–2014
Sociologists and economists have typically focused on different dimensions of socio-economic inequalities. Sociologists have been mainly concerned with occupational and educational indicators, whereas economists have focused on the earnings, income, and wealth distribution. The article integrates sociological and economics’ approaches to the study of socio-economic inequalities, by providing an analysis of the relationship between social class an…
Egohoods that segregate. Immigrants, social contexts, and income penalties
This paper looks at the causal impact of residential segregation on income among migrants in Brescia, a wealthy industrial city of about 200,000 inhabitants in North‐Eastern Italy, where almost one citizen out of five is born abroad. Using a new register‐like dataset including economic and demographic microdata from administrative sources, we geo‐localised each migrant household and created for each individual an “egohood” by imposing buffer circ…
The occupational integration of migrant women in Western European labour markets
This paper studies the integration of migrant women in six European labour markets, highlighting how their migration penalty is related to the family’s migration dynamics and to the husband’s occupational condition. In order to compare the labour market outcomes of native and migrant women, Linear Probability Models are estimated using EU–LFS data. Results show that migrant women are penalized everywhere. However, in the Mediterranean labour mark…

Social stratification, secondary school tracking and university enrolment in Italy
This paper looks at class inequality in the probability of enrolling in university in Italy from a long-term perspective. Given that Italian higher secondary education is tracked, it studies how tracking interacts over time with class origin in the production of inequality of educational opportunities, thus contributing to the growing literature on the inequality effects of the qualitative, or horizontal, stratification of educational systems. Th…

The educational integration of second generation southern Italian migrants to the north
After WW2 Italy experienced a huge internal migration from the south to the northern Italian regions. More than two million individuals moved up north, and the majority of them settled down permanently. How were southern internal migrants integrated into n

The Occupational Integration of Male Migrants in Western European Countries
This paper looks at the migrants' occupational integration process. Two main theoretical perspectives are tested: the first one (assimilation view) claims that in the short‐run migrants are penalized, but as they settle in the receiving country they get integrated into the host society; the second one (segmented assimilation view) claims that disadvantages persist in the long‐run. EU‐LFS and ESS data are described and modelled, in order to compar…
The Bologna Process in Italy
Italy was among the promoters of the Bologna Process and the early adopters of the reform. If one looks at its impact on the formal structure of curricula and study programmes, the reform undertaken under the Bologna banner seems to have been one of the major educational reforms ever achieved in Italy. This article describes how the Bologna Process has unfolded in Italy, looking at the reasons why a reform that for long eluded Italian policymaker…
Participation, equality of opportunity and returns to tertiary education in contemporary Europe
The aim of the paper is to investigate the consequences of the expansion of higher education on two goals of the education system, namely promoting equity of educational opportunities and providing credentials that facilitate the matching of labour supply and demand. The first goal is typically studied by research on inequality of educational opportunity; the second by research on returns to education and credential inflation. The key idea of the…

Persistent Inequalities? Expansion of Education and Class Inequality in Italy and Spain
The paper analyses inequalities in educational outcomes (IEO) by class of family of origin in Italy and Spain for five 10-year cohorts born from 1920 to 1969, using the cumulative logit (ordinal regression) model. In both countries the question is whether, as education expanded, the class IEO's remained stable or diminished. The dominant view in the 1990s was that, with the exception of a few countries, inequalities persisted. In the current deca…

Civicness and Economic Performance. A Longitudinal Analysis of Italian Provinces, 1980-2000
The paper analyses the relations between civicness and economic performance at the macro level. It builds on R. D. Putnam’s research on civicness in Italian regions and on the debate it started, and estimates LISREL models of structural equations with data for 95 Italian provinces from the 1980s to the 2000s. Firstly, the empirical analysis shows that civicness and economic performance are longitudinally correlated, that their reciprocal effects …
