Political alienation among basic income support recipients in Germany
This study explores the link between receiving basic income support (BIS) and political alienation in Germany, with a focus on political trust and satisfaction with democracy. We argue that receiving BIS is associated with experiences of material and social exclusion and impairs subjective social integration. Against the background of major structural welfare reforms in recent decades, we assume that BIS recipients are likely to attribute respons…
Changes in Income Poverty Risks at the Transition from Unemployment to Employment
Unemployment is a major risk factor of poverty and employment is regarded key to overcoming it. The present study examines how the income poverty risk of unemployed individuals changes in the short and medium term, when they take up work, and whether the effects differ according to the type of employment. The focus is on permanent and fixed-term job contracts, as the political promotion of fixed-term employment has often been framed as an effort …
Digital Transformation and Subjective Job Insecurity in Germany
The present study examines to what extent employees in Germany are afraid of losing their jobs, depending on the degree of computerization of their occupations. So far, empirical evidence on the relationship between digital transformation and subjective job insecurity is scarce. We distinguish three interrelated insecurity measures: cognitive job insecurity, i.e. the individual assessment of job loss probability, labour market insecurity, i.e. th…
Standard and non-standard employment Different jobs, same rights
Precarious Employment and Bargaining Power
This article deals with the role of bargaining power in shaping workers’ willingness to accept fixed-term jobs. It is assumed that workers prefer permanent contracts but may be willing to compromise on job security under certain conditions. To what extent is the willingness to accept fixed-term contracts influenced by personal characteristics and contextual factors that shape individuals’ bargaining power vis-à-vis employers? In a factorial surve…

Active Labour Market Policies and Social Integration in Germany
This article is about the impact of ‘One-Euro-Jobs’, a German active labour market programme, on the social integration of unemployed individuals. We examine, first, whether programme participation improves individuals’ sense of social integration. Second, we address the mechanisms behind this association by analysing subgroup-specific participation effects. Therefore, we analyse how specific programme features, the quality of interactions with w…
Do fixed-term and temporary agency workers feel socially excluded? Labour market integration and social well-being in Germany
In this study we examine how employment insecurity affects social exclusion using data from the German panel study PASS. Assuming that secure employment is an important condition for the subjective feeling of social affiliation, we compare unemployed individuals and those in fixed-term, temporary agency or permanent employment. Applying hybrid random effects regression models we find that temporary workers feel less affiliated to society than per…
Gender Segregation in Training and Social Mobility of Women in West Germany
Despite declining gender differences in educational attainment and a trend towards increasing social fluidity in Germany, men and women differ substantially with regard to typical occupational class destinations. While under-represented in the upper service class and the skilled working class, women are over-represented in non-manual routine class positions. In this article, we examine the influence of social origin and education on gender-specif…
Pass – A Household Panel Survey for Research on Unemployment and Poverty
The series of reforms of the assistance scheme for long-term unemployed persons in Germany that was introduced between 2003 and 2005, the so called Hartz-reforms, is considered one of the major post-war reforms of the German social security system (Moller / Walwei, 2009, 11). It culminated in the combination of the former unemployment assistance (‘Arbeitslosenhilfe’) and social assistance (‘Sozialhilfe’) into a new form of benefit for all persons…
