How Much Does Migration Affect Labor Supply in Europe? Methodological Insights and Contemporary Evidence from the European Union and Selected European Countries
In Europe, the slowdown in working-age population growth and population aging pose challenges, particularly vis-à-vis the current and future volume of labor supply. Throughout the 2010s, these demographic transformations took place against a backdrop of increasing migration flows and stocks. This IMR Research Note aims to enrich the discussion of the aforementioned issues and to provide methodological and empirical evidence on the role of migrati…
On the contribution of foreign-born populations to overall population change in Europe
Within the context of significant migration flows, persisting low fertility settings, and population ageing in more developed areas, increased focus has been placed on the impact of migration on population change in receiving countries
Civil Society Organizations and Labour Market Integration for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Greece
The 2015 crisis of refugee policies saw an upgrade in the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) as service providers for the migrant population in Greece. CSOs attempted to substitute for the government’s failure to provide a migration policy designed for the social integration of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers (MRAs). As a result, they have been overseeing a majority of services related to the integration of MRAs in the labour market…

The compositional effects of education and employment on Greek male and female fertility rates during 2000-2014
As many of the advanced countries that were hit hard by the recent economic recession also have persistently low fertility rates, researchers are increasingly interested in examining how the educationâ employment gradient shapes fertility outcomes
Migrant and non-migrant fertility in Greece
This paper examines fertility patterns and differentials between migrant and non-migrant women in Greece using data from the 2001 census on the reported numbers of children ever-born alive by citizenship. Special tabulations produced by the National Statistical Service of Greece are analysed and presented here. The analysis focuses on Greek, Albanian and Bulgarian women born over 1950-1970. Noticeable differences are observed. Despite the fact th…
Male fertility in Greece
Background: More than downplayed, the role of men in the demographic analysis of reproduction has been entirely neglected. However, male fertility can be an important issue for exploring how economic and employment uncertainties relate to fertility and family dynamics. Objective: This paper intends to study fertility variations over time, relying solely on data referring to father's socio-demographic characteristics; in particular, their age, edu…
Increasingly heterogeneous ages at first birth by education in Southern European and Anglo-American family-policy regimes
According to the 'reproductive polarization' hypothesis, family-policy regimes unfavourable to the combination of employment with motherhood generate greater socio-economic differentials in fertility than other regimes. This hypothesis has been tested mainly for 'liberal' Anglo-American regimes. To investigate the effects elsewhere, we compared education differentials in age at first birth among native-born women of 1950s and 1960s birth cohorts …
