  • Sunken Fields and Prehispanic Subsistence on the Peruvian Coast

    Open Access•Jeffrey R Parsons, Norbert P Psuty•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1975•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 9

A series of hypotheses concerning the subsistence role of prehistoric sunken field agriculture are developed and evaluated in light of distributional studies of sunken fields along the entire Peruvian coast and excavations at one sunken field locality in the Chilca Valley. Our data suggest that (1) sunken fields occupy distinctive natural topographic lows; (2) sunken field agriculture developed late in the prehispanic sequence; (3) sunken field c…

  • Land-Use Competition on a Geomorphic Surface

Norbert P Psuty, PAUL SANFORD SALTER et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1969

From its ancestral home in Indo-Burma, the mango was spread into the Western Hemisphere by the Portuguese and Spanish during the period of exploration and discovery. It was brought into Florida over a century ago and, through intermittent periods of wax and wane, mango production has become concentrated on the crestal portions of a Pleistocene limestone surface in southeastern Dade County. The Pleistocene surface, however, is also highly valued f…

  • Beach-Ridge Development in Tabasco, Mexico 1

    Norbert P Psuty•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1965•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

The largest Gulf coast alluvial plain in Mexico lies primarily in the state of Tabasco. Although predominantly a fluvial-deltaic plain, the coastal landforms contribute beach-ridge topography which extends inland up to twenty miles. Beach ridges attain fullest development adjacent to distributory channels and reflect periods of active discharge. Trenching of the ridges disclosed their internal stratification to comprise foreset units which sugges…
