Cheyenne Primacy
The attribution of Sioux primacy in the Plains Indian wars of the nineteenth century rests upon numerical superiority rather than actual battles fought and casualties taken. Through ethnogenesis, the formation of a new political entity, the Cheyennes attained the only “tribal” status in the Great Plains, marked by an overarching authority structure buttressed by powerful religious sanctions. The status of berdache among North American Indians was filled by persons, usually male, who remained members of their biological gender but assumed important social characteristics of the other gender. Concentrated in western and midwestern North America, berdaches were few. The status tended to disappear after Indian societies came under outside political control. Population Trends Among Present-Day Omaha Indians
Data collected in 1972 from three communities in Nebraska, through intensive interviewing of women of childbearing age, are summarized. Rural-urban contrasts in variables related to population growth indicate that Omaha women are having many wanted children (4.5 by age 34). City residents have (and want) families at least as large as those had (and wanted) by reservation residents. Large families are not explained by (a) religious factors; (b) gr…
