Air Photographic Mapping of San Marcos Pueblo
San Marcos Pueblo, dating between A.C. 1340 and 1700, is a large,Glaze Period town of the Anasazi-Pueblo cultural tradition. An aerial map of this protohistoric site was made from CIR (color infrared) photography provided by the Stennis Space Center, NASA. Ground confirmation of the aerial map has been affected through archaeological studies beginning in 1915 and continuing, intermittently, until 1993. The verified map is presented as a modern se…
Check Dams at Chimney Rock Mesa
In 1988, two check dam localities were discovered in ravines on the slopes of Chimney Rock Mesa in southwestern Colorado. They are associated with large, Anasazi villages with Pueblo I and Pueblo II components. Soil chemistry, pollen, and phytolith tests were conducted to determine the role of the check dams in agriculture. Modern environmental data and environmental reconstructions are used to argue that the check dam localities maximize runoff …
The Construction and Configuration of Anasazi Pebble-Mulch Gardens in the Northern Rio Grande
Rio Grande Anasazi in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries A.D. mulched hundreds of garden-sized plots with pebbles to increase soil moisture, reduce erosion, extend the growing season, and increase crop yields. This paper reports on the construction and configuration of pebble-mulch gardens in New Mexico, focusing particularly on those in the Galisteo Basin. Surfaces adjacent to these gardens were scraped and pits were excavated to collect gra…

The Effects of Environment and Culture on the Distribution of Prehistoric Dwellings at Chimney Rock Mesa, Colorado
This study examines the roles of cultural change, social status, and natural resources in influencing both the siting and occupance of prehistoric (10th-12th century) pit house and pueblo dwellings in the Chimney Rock Archaeological Area (CRAA) in south-western Colorado. The study first demonstrates a prominent bimodal clustering of riverine pit house and mesa-top pueblo settlements, and then presents a number of hypotheses to account for the ele…
Rethinking Apachean Ceramics
A five day conference on Apachean ceramics was held at the University of Colorado, Boulder from July 29 through August 2, 1985. The format of this conference consisted of a workshop with a series of open discussions rather than formal papers. Results of this conference included a reorganization of Brugge's (1982) Apachean ceramic taxonomy. The participants concluded that more than one source was responsible for the development of Southern Athapas…
Spatial Analysis Of Archaeological Data At The John Martin Dam And Reservoir, Southeastern Colorado
Prehistoric spatial data recovered from the John Martin Dam and Reservoir, Bent County, southeastern Colorado, was obtained from sites of the Archaic, Formative, and Buffalo Hunter stages of High Plains archaeology. These data, most of which dates to the last 3000 years, were analyzed in order to address four problem areas: (1) site function, (2) site-to-site networking, (3) past adaptive practices, and (4) evolutionary trends in the data. These …
Resource Management and Locational Strategies of Certain Prehistoric Sites in Central Texas
An analysis of three Archaic Nee-American Stage sites along the San Gabriel River of central Texas was performed in order to relate management of local resources to choice of site location. This salvagefinanced investigation led to the conclusion” that both midden and campsites were located near but not necessarily on the source of a few highly valued products to the detriment of all other less desirable and more distant resources
Population Dislocation in the Navaho Reservoir District, New Mexico and Colorado
The Navaho Reservoir District is an arbitrarily defined unit of salvage archaeological research located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent portions of Colorado. As such, it is used here as a data source for the study of ninth and tenth century population dislocations due to climatic change and river erosion. The affected Pueblo farming peoples migrated by means of slow, steady upstream drift. Violent land competition between the agrarian com…
