  • Negotiating Space at Emőd-Nagyhalom

Tobias L Kienlin, Sabrina Save et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2026

In this paper we present the results of a second systematic core drilling campaign at the Bronze Age site of Emőd-Nagyhalom in north-eastern Hungary, conducted in autumn 2024. Focusing on a group of houses situated in the outer settlement just beyond the north-eastern section of the enclosing ditch, the campaign built on earlier geomagnetic prospection, surface survey and preliminary coring that indicated an unexpectedly well-preserved, stratifie…

  • The times of a Bronze Age tell and outer settlement

    Open Access•Tobias L Kienlin, Klára P Fischl•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2026

In this paper we present the results of a systematic core drilling campaign at Maklár-Baglyashalom in 2021, that took aim at the central tell part of the site, its enclosure(s) and (house) anomalies in the outer part of the settlement. The location of the future tell of Baglyashalom was first occupied some time around 2000 BC, starting from a plot distinctly smaller than the current mound which developed in its place over the next 400 years. Most…

  • Social life and the material world

    Open Access•Tobias L Kienlin•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Carpathica•2025

This paper revisits the role of practice theory in shaping archaeological understandings of sociality and materiality. It argues that theories of practice, as developed by Giddens, Bourdieu and subsequent scholars, remain indispensable for analysing the interplay between society and the material world. Against the background of recent post-humanist and symmetrical approaches that decentre human agency and promote distributed or material agencies,…

  • From hearths to homes

Marian Adrian Lie, Alexandra Găvan et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2025

This paper provides an overview and a complex analysis of the numerous and varied hearths found during excavations at the multi-component site of Toboliu. The discussion focuses on the structural and technical characteristics of these fire installations, as well as on their find contexts. The forms, construction methods, and materials of the hearths will be discussed, as is their location. As hearths were the focal points of the household, playin…

  • Reconstructing two buildings and architectural decorations on the Bronze Age Tell of Borsodivánka-Nagyhalom (Northeastern Hungary)

Open Access•Klára P Fischl, Tamás Pusztai et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2025

The present study describes and reconstructs the architecture of Bronze Age Houses G and H from Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom, Northeastern Hungary. The site was investigated in the frame of the Borsod Region Bronze Age Settlement (BORBAS) project. Beyond the information on these two buildings derived from the excavation, we will also incorporate the results of scientific studies, micromorphology and phytoliths analysis conducted on the archi…

  • Exploring the chronostratigraphy of a Bronze Age settlement through core drilling

Marian Adrian Lie, Alexandra Găvan et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2024•Citada por: 1

Core drilling has been used successfully in archaeology for a variety of applications, including mapping stratigraphy across large areas, estimating feature depth and content, understanding site formation processes, as well as complementing information obtained through surface collection and geophysical survey. In this paper, we provide an overview of the first core drilling campaign carried out in 2021 on the outer settlement of the Bronze Age t…

This paper compares various 'earthen' construction materials and building techniques from three Middle Bronze Age tell (multi-layered settlement) sites in Hungary: Százhalombatta-Földvár, Kakucs-Turján (Vatya material culture) and Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom (Otomani-Füzesabony Cultural Circle (OFCC)). A feltárt épületrész a rendelkezésre álló adatok alapján párhuzam nélküli a Kárpát-medencei bronzkor-…

Excavations have been carried out on the Bronze Age tell settlement at Borsodivánka-Marhajárás-Nagyhalom since 2015. During the 2022 campaign, part of a burnt-down building was unearthed. The architectural remains, preserved by fire, let us observe and record details that allowed a partial reconstruction of the one-time house’s internal structure and wall decorations. Based on the available data, the building unearthed at Borsodivánka has current…

  • Copper and Bronze

    Tobias L Kienlin•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook Of The…•2013

This article discusses Bronze Age metalworking and the use of bronze and copper. It first studies the different approaches to prehistoric metalworking, including the sub-discipline of archaeometallurgy. The article then reviews the early evidence for copper mining, smelting, metalworking, and the progression of different types of copper and copper alloys, emphasising the situation of Bronze Age metalworking in central and south-eastern Europe. It…

The inner cores of these multi-layer sites are just one part of a more complex whole. They are surrounded by an outer settlement that is separated by a deep and wide ditch from the inner tell part. In this paper an attempt is made to integrate discussions on social and technological aspects of Copper Age metallurgy. The South-east European Copper Age is widely held to be characterised by newly emerging elites and a strong societal impact of metallurgy. It is shown that much of this discussion is influenced by the evidence of the exceptionally rich Varna cemetery in Bulgaria. This is not a suitable model for Copper Age social structure in ge…

During this period, different types of copper were in use: arsenical copper, Fahlerz copper and tin bronze. We examine if and to what extent the different properties of the metals used were known to prehistoric metalworkers and actively manipulated in the production of the axes. The development of …
