  • Tracing Seaweed as Food and Fodder in Archaeology

Magdalena Blanz, M Balasse et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2026•Referencias: 20

Seaweed is often overlooked as a potential food source for animals and humans in archaeological interpretations. However, plentiful historical and ecological evidence attests to seaweed consumption by humans and domesticated and wild animals (e.g., sheep, cattle, deer, coyotes). This literature review provides a summary of the use of seaweed as food and fodder by humans and terrestrial mammals more generally, and how seaweed consumption may be de…

  • The effect of seaweed fertilisation on sulfur isotope ratios (δ34S) and grain size in barley

    Open Access•Magdalena Blanz, D R Gröcke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024

Introduction Stable sulfur isotope ratios (δ 34 S) in bone collagen are often employed to study the consumption of marine and freshwater fish, wetland grazing, marine foraging patterns, and the possible geographic origins of food sources. However, a recent small-scale crop experiment showed that biofertilisation with seaweed can elevate δ 34 S in Celtic beans by ca. 10 ‰. Consumption of this food could erroneously suggest a marine diet and theref…

  • Bioarchaeological Perspectives on Late Antiquity in Dalmatia

    Open Access•Brina Zagorc, Magdalena Blanz et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 57

Late Antiquity Dalmatia was a time and place of political unrest in the Roman Empire that influenced the lives of those in that region. The Late Antique burial site of Hvar - Radošević, spanning the 3rd to 5th centuries CE, is located on the Croatian Dalmatian island of Hvar. Given the time frame and location on a busy marine trade route, the study of this burial site offers us a glimpse into the lives of the Late Antique population living on thi…

  • Trace element ratios in tooth enamel as palaeodietary indicators of seaweed consumption and coastal grazing, and their broader applicability

Open Access•Magdalena Blanz, Samuel Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 16

Ratios of barium and strontium concentrations in skeletal samples (e.g. in the logarithmic form lg(Ba/Sr)), are a possible alternative or supplementary marker to stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) for identification of marine food consumption. Previous studies have compared lg(Ba/Sr) values between different species of animals with differing diets, but few studies have been performed where animals of the same species consumed known diets ranging…

  • Identifying seaweed consumption by sheep using isotope analysis of their bones and teeth

Open Access•Magdalena Blanz, Ingrid Mainland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2020•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 5

  • Seaweed fertilisation impacts the chemical and isotopic composition of barley

Open Access•Magdalena Blanz, Philippa Ascough et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2019•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 15

  • Potential dietary, non-metabolic accumulation of arsenic (As) in seaweed-eating sheep's teeth

    Open Access•Magdalena Blanz, K Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6
