Assessing the spatio-temporal pattern and determinants of child marriage in Nigeria
Millions of young girls in Nigeria have continued to suffer the negative consequences of early marriage such as discontinuation of education and restricting them from achieving their full potential. Successive Nigerian governments have therefore deployed different strategies over the years to mitigate the practice, particularly in the northern part of the country. This study analysed the changes in the pattern of child marriage across space-time …
Women’s empowerment and live birth registration coverage in Nigeria
Spatial Pattern and Decomposition Analysis of the Educational Status Gap in Factors Associated with Risky Sexual Behavior Among Women with Disabilities in Ten African Countries
Despite significant improvements in access to sexual and reproductive health services worldwide, many people with disabilities, particularly in low-income settings, remain vulnerable to risky sexual behaviors, predisposing them to sexual and reproductive health problems. This study examined the spatial patterns and performed a decomposition analysis of the educational status disparity in factors associated with risky sexual behavior among women w…
Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Violent Conflict and Fatality in Nigeria
For many decades, Nigeria has been plagued by a consistently high rate of violent events, resulting in countless fatalities and the displacement of citizens. This study aimed to model the spatio-temporal patterns of these events and the associated fatality to gain insight into the chain of events and provide a basis for swift and strategic intervention. To this end, a Cox point process model through the stochastic partial differential equation wa…
Analysis of the geographical variations in women’s empowerment in Nigeria
Women’s empowerment is essential in improving maternal health. We analyse the geographical variability of women’s empowerment using data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. Eight indicators of empowerment were created using latent scores derived from factor analysis and used to assign the women into one of low, moderate or high category of empowerment. A geoadditive ordinal model was used to quantify the effects of demographic an…
An assessment of the coverage of live-birth registration across space in Nigeria
Geographic distribution of single motherhood in Nigeria
The prevalence of single motherhood, associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes, is now increasing rapidly across Nigerian states. The distribution of single mothers could vary widely across geographical settings in highly heterogeneous Nigerian states with diverse sociocultural, religious, and ethnic beliefs, which are some of the drivers of parenting styles. Using cross-sectional data from four waves of the Nigeria Demographic H…
Armed conflict, insecurity, and attitudes toward women's and girls' reproductive autonomy in Nigeria
Our findings suggest that conflict and insecurity pose a threat to, but also facilitate opportunities for, women's and girls' reproductive autonomy. Contraception, abortion, early marriage, and postponement or childbearing may be perceived as risk-aversion strategies in response to mortality threats, livelihood losses, and conflict-driven sexual violence. Our findings foreshadow changes in fertility and relationship patterns in conflict-affected …
Intimate partner violence and malnutrition among women of reproductive age in Western Africa
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health issue, and the experience varies among population sub-groups in Africa. In the West African sub-region, IPV perpetrated against women remains high and is exacerbated by the pertaining cultural milieu. It affects women’s health, wellbeing, and nutritional status. We examined the association between women’s lifetime experiences of physical, sexual, and emotional IPV and undernutrition by quantifyin…
Geostatistical patterns of comorbidity of diarrhea, acute respiratory infection, and stunting among under-five children in Nigeria
Among children under five in Nigeria, in the year 2018, the prevalence of diarrhea was 13%, that of acute respiratory infections 3%, and that of stunting 37%. A shared-component model highlights geographic variations in the comorbidities of these diseases. The data are from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The majority of states in northern Nigeria presented clusters of higher risk for comorbidities of any pair of the three disease…
A spatio-temporal analysis of cause-specific mortality in São Paulo State, Brazil
Using five cause-specific mortality data sourced by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and over 17 years period, we applied Bayesian spatio-temporal models on 644 municipalities of the state of São Paulo, using logistic model to the binary outcome that specifies whether or not the death was from a specific cause. We modeled the temporal mortality effects using B-splines, while the spatial components were considered through Gaussian and Markov rand…
Spatial Co-Morbidity of Childhood Acute Respiratory Infection, Diarrhoea and Stunting in Nigeria
In low- and middle-income countries, children aged below 5 years frequently suffer from disease co-occurrence. This study assessed whether the co-occurrence of acute respiratory infection (ARI), diarrhoea and stunting observed at the child level could also be reflected ecologically. We considered disease data on 69,579 children (0-59 months) from the 2008, 2013, and 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys using a hierarchical Bayesian spatial…
Spatial location, temperature and rainfall diversity affect the double burden of malnutrition among women in Kenya
Studies have looked into how environmental and climate covariates affect under-and over-nutrition, but little is known about the spatial distribution of different forms of malnutrition in Kenya and whether there are locations that suffer from double-burden of malnutrition. This research quantifies spatial variations and estimates how climatic and environmental factors affect under-and over-nutrition among women in Kenya. This enables us to determ…
Geostatistical modeling of malaria prevalence among under-five children in Rwanda
Potential intervention programs that focus on individuals living in rural areas, lowest wealth quintile, and the locations with high risks should be reinforced. Variations in climatic factors particularly temperature and rainfall should be taken into account when formulating malaria intervention programs in Rwanda
Double burden of underweight and overweight among Indian adults
Objective: The current study explores the spatial patterns of underweight and overweight among adult men and women in districts of India and identifies the micro-geographical locations where the risks of underweight and overweight are simultaneously prevalent, after accounting for demographic and socio-economic factors. Design: We relied on BMI (weight (kg)/height squared (m 2 )), a measure of nutritional status among adult individuals, from the …
Analysis of Covid-19 Cases' Spatial Dependence in US Counties Reveals Health Inequalities
On March 13, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2 a pandemic. Since then the virus has infected over 9.1 million individuals and resulted in over 470,000 deaths worldwide (as of June 24, 2020). Here, we discuss the spatial correlation between county population health rankings and the incidence of COVID-19 cases and COVID-19 related deaths in the United…
Early Transmission Dynamics of Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Nigeria
On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) was notified of a novel coronavirus disease in China that was later named COVID-19. On 11 March 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. The first instance of the virus in Nigeria was documented on 27 February 2020. This study provides a preliminary epidemiological analysis of the first 45 days of COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria. We estimated the early transmissibility via time-…

Estimating geographic variations in the determinants of attitude towards the practice of female genital mutilation in Nigeria
Female genital mutilation (FGM) has persisted in Nigeria despite the very harmful effects on its victims. Massive inequality in the demographic and socioeconomic status of the Nigerian populace, coupled with marked differences in cultural values, have led to lopsided patterns of most health indicators based on the geographical location. The risk factors of health indicators are equally expected to vary according to location. This study aimed to e…

Modelling Geographical Variations and Determinants of Use of Modern Family Planning Methods Among Women of Reproductive Age in Nigeria
Understanding the level, trend, geographical variations and determinants of use of modern family planning (FP) plays a major role in designing effective interventions leading to increased usage. This study assessed these characteristics of FP use in Nigeria using data from the 2003, 2005 and 2007 National HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey, a national population-based household survey. A Bayesian geo-additive procedure was used, which provid…
A Poisson Regression Model to Examine Spatial Patterns in Antenatal Care Utilisation in Nigeria
Despite the benefits of antenat]al care to the mother and the child, it is available less often in sub‐Saharan Africa than in other regions. Coverage of at least four visits is lower, with a slower rate of increase, than in other regions of the world. Using data from 2008 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, we applied a Poisson regression model with geo‐additive predictors to analyse individual‐level and community‐level determinants of antenat…
