This article interrogates the uses and abuses of Franz Kafka's enigmatic figure Odradek as an illustration for three recent approaches in the environmental humanities: Timothy Morton's notion of the hyperobject, Jane Bennett's vital materialism, and J. This article explores the thematic and structural significance of the figure of the wound to Jean Genet's Pompes funèbres (1947) and Hélène Cixous's Souffles (1975). With reference to the differences between editions of Pompes funèbres and through a detailed genetic study of the hitherto unexamined manuscripts of Souffles (Cixous's direct response to Genet's novel), the article demonstrates how (self-)censorship becomes constitutive of narrative …

Beginning with an off-color and seemingly off-topic parenthetical joke near the conclusion of Elfriede Jelinek’s novel Gier (2000), this article reads that book beside a draft fragment of Ingeborg Bachmann’s 1971 novel Malina called “Besichtigung einer alten Stadt” in order to reveal how both authors simultaneously resist but neverthe-less participate in international literary tourism relating to their native Austria.
