From cartridge cases to spatial patterns
This study uses ballistic evidence entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) to examine near-repeat shooting patterns in Detroit, Michigan, drawing on 5487 incidents involving the discharge of one or more firearms between January 2021 and October 2022. Conducted within the context of the Detroit Crime Gun Intelligence Center, our study captures a broad view of gun violence, integrates NIBIN linkages to advance und…
Using Bayesian Mixed Effect Generalized Linear Models to Evaluate Criminological Interventions
Describing the Hazard of Recidivism Among Individuals Convicted of Sex-Related Offenses
This study uses administrative data from Michigan to present a descriptive analysis of recidivism hazard among a large cohort of individuals convicted of sex-related offenses (ICSOs) ( N = 23,621) with an average follow-up of 10.5 years, up to a maximum of 15 years. Using Bayesian discrete-time survival models, we find within 15 years 19% of this cohort of ICSOs was returned to prison, for either a new crime or technical violation, or received a …

Insights from law enforcement personnel during the Covid-19 pandemic
In the United States (U.S.), elevated levels of firearm violence following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in late March 2020 drew attention to efforts taken by law enforcement to reduce and prevent firearm violence through policing innovations. However, it is not well-understood how operational changes in policing during this time impacted these efforts. Our study is the first to consider the perceptions and experiences of law enforcement per…

Community-driven disorder reduction
This study examines the effects of a neighbourhood greening and beautification strategy called Clean & Green on crime prevention and reduction. Point level data for all Part I index crimes and Clean & Green efforts in the study area from 2005 to 2014 are analysed using spatial and linear regression with two key modifications: (1) controlling for temporal and spatial dependencies between points; and (2) allowing for potentially non-linear temporal…
Cascades
In “Cascades: War, crime, peace and crime prevention,“ Braithwaite has offered a significant theoretical contribution. As in his prior work, this theory integrates several theoretical perspectives. He draws upon theory and research in war and peace, crime causation, and crime prevention. He also offers insights ranging from macro to micro levels. This paper responds to “Cascades” by noting the issues the theory seeks to explain. Particular emphas…
A Comparative Study of Fear of Crime among Korean Immigrants in the United States and Native Koreans in South Korea
Scholars implicitly assume that the conceptual models of fear of crime found in the Western literature are also applicable to populations that have different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. To investigate whether such an assumption is legitimate, the current study analyzed survey data from samples of Korean immigrants in the Detroit metropolitan area and native Koreans in Seoul, South Korea. The result indicated a higher level of fear among nati…
Perceptions of Procedural Justice Mediate the Relationship Between Local Violent Crime Density and Crime Reporting Intentions
Community attitudes toward the police are of increasing concern to scholars and practitioners. Although it is widely accepted that perceptions of procedural justice are influential in shaping citizens’ attitudes toward police, prior studies have not considered its relationship to crime density. To address this gap, we examined the relationship between crime density, perceptions of procedural justice, and intentions to report crimes to police usin…

Research Summary Pulling levers policing draws upon the focused deterrence framework, which has shown considerable promise when directed at youth, gun, and gang offenders. However, much less is known about the viability of pulling levers when applied to different contexts as well as to diverse groups of offenders. We examine the High Point (North Carolina) Drug Market Intervention (DMI), the first site to use pulling levers as a place‐based polic…

Conservation criminology and the global trade in electronic waste
The global trade in electronic waste destined for recycling, disposal or reuse (E-waste) poses a significant risk to human health and the natural environment from improper recycling and disposal. However, in part due to the lack of regulatory attention, few empirical studies of this issue exist. In this paper, we fill this knowledge gap by applying a conservation criminology framework to E-waste. Specifically, we draw on criminology and criminal …
Environmental and natural-resource crime
Over the past two decades, criminologists and policy-makers have started to pay more attention to the issue of environmental and natural-resource crime. These “green crimes” are often global in sco
An Examination of the Covariates of Female Homicide Victimization and Offending
This study examines and compares the covariates of female homicide offending and victimization in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Newark, New Jersey. Four research questions are examined: (a) What individual and structural factors differentiate female and male victimization? (b) Are there individual and structural factors that differentiate female and male offending? (c) Do the covariates of female involvement in lethal acts differ by location as comp…
Transnational white‐collar crime and risk
Research Summary Business transactions have increasingly been crossing national borders, thereby presenting greater opportunities for white‐collar crime and for the externalization of risk. The global economic crisis, resulting in part from the subprime mortgage scandal, is a prime example of this potential. To develop theoretical perspectives and practical interventions to prevent and respond to the global financial crisis, we consider similar i…

Introducing Conservation Criminology
Environmental crimes, noncompliance and risks create significant harm to the health of humans and the natural world. Yet, the field of criminology has historically shown relatively little interest in the topic. The emergence of environmental or green criminology over the past decade marks a shift in this trend, but attempts to define a unique area of study have been extensively criticized. In the following paper, we offer a conceptual framework, …

Media coverage of police misconduct and attitudes toward police
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how celebrated cases affect attitudes toward police, controlling for key demographic, police contact, and neighborhood contextual variables. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents two waves of public opinion data measuring attitudes toward police, police services, police harassment, and officer guilt before and after a celebrated police misconduct trial. Data were collected by telephone from…

Reducing Firearms Violence Through Directed Police Patrol
Research Summary: This evaluation of a directed police patrol project utilizes a pre‐post quasi‐experimental design with a non‐equivalent control group as well as an interrupted time series analysis. The results suggest that directed patrol had an impact on firearms crime in one of the target areas but not the other. Policy Implications: The results suggest that a specific deterrence strategy whereby the police utilize directed patrol to focus on…

The Misperception of Public Opinion Toward Capital Punishment
Appellate courts in the United States, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have looked to public opinion and legislative trends to interpret the meaning of "evolving standards of decency" in determining whether capital punishment violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. Bowers's spuriousness explanation of public support for capital punishment suggests that lawmakers and appellate judges have misinterpreted publi…

Obstacles to Seemingly Simple Reform
This study involves analysis of the implementation of a new release on recognizance (ROR) policy governing misdemeanor cases in a small, mid- western county. The case study is interesting because the policy seems to be characterized by several factors that might lead to predictions of high compliance with policy intent. The findings, however, suggest that consid- erable slippage between intent and implementation occurred. It is argued that this s…

Neighborhood disorder, integration, and the fear of crime
Three distinct but related models of fear of crime have emerged in the research literature: victimization, disorder, and community concern/community control. Of the three, the community concern/community control model remains least developed. This study seeks to extend the research by including several distinct dimensions of the community concerns model, along with variables drawn from the victimization and disorder frameworks, in an overall mode…

Global and Local Policing
Police agencies throughout the world find themselves facing competing demands. On the one hand, the community policing movement emphasizes the need to focus at a neighborhood level and to increase ties with local citizens, businesses, and neighborhood groups. At the same time, processes of globalization and technological innovation generate new forms of crime, criminal organizations, and terrorism that span national borders. Rather than making a …

The Roles of the Police in the Offender Reentry Process
The increasing number of former inmates returning from prison to the community, coupled with the high level of reoffending among former inmates, raises public safety issues for society in general as well as for particular communities in which significant numbers of former inmates reside. From a problem‐solving perspective, crime generated by recently released inmates with persistent high rates of offending is one chronic crime problem calling for…
