An Integrated Approach to Understanding the Occupational Trajectory of Mercadal in Southern Aragon, Spain
This article presents an integrated historical ecological investigation of the abandoned Medieval village of Mercadal in southern Aragon, Spain. Combining non-invasive archaeogeophysical survey (magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar), targeted excavation, shovel testing, radiocarbon dating, and analytical cartography, we examine spatial organization, geomorphic context, and occupational chronology of the site. Bayesian modeling indicates a bi…
Stable Isotope Analysis and Chronology Building at the Hokfv-Mocvse Cultural Site, the Earliest Evidence for South Atlantic Shell-Ring Villages
Circular shell rings along the South Atlantic coast of the United States are vestiges of the earliest sedentary villages in North America, dating to 4500-3000 BP. However, little is known about when Indigenous communities began constructing these shell-ring villages. This article presents data from the Hokfv-Mocvse Shell Ring on Ossabaw Island, Georgia. Although shell rings are often associated with the earliest ceramics in North America, no cera…
The social-ecological landscape of herding on the high mountain commons of Larrau in the western Pyrenees (France)
Introduction Much has been written about herding, pastoralism and the ethos of the commons that persists in Soule and the valley republics of the western Pyrenees. However, more has been written about the idealized norms of the practice than the social dynamics of alliance formation on which cooperation in herding on the high mountain commons in Soule has depended for centuries. We use empirical evidence from the parish-commune of Larrau to analy…
Legacy radiocarbon dates and the archaeological chronology of the Western Pyrenees
The Western Pyrenees as a geographic region spanning portions of France and Spain is explored through the analysis of publicly available legacy radiocarbon dates from archaeological contexts. Eight hundred and eighty-three radiocarbon dates were identified. After completing a chronometric hygiene, a total of 416 radiocarbon dates were then available for use in our Bayesian analysis and simulations. Dates were calibrated using OxCal 4.2.7 and the …
Can Science Writing Collectives Overcome Barriers to More Democratic Communication and Collaboration? Lessons from Environmental Communication Praxis in Southern Appalachia
Despite compelling reasons to involve nonscientists in the production of ecological knowledge, cultural and institutional factors often dis-incentivize engagement between scientists and nonscientists. This paper details our efforts to develop a biweekly newspaper column to increase communication between ecological scientists, social scientists, and the communities within which they work. Addressing community-generated topics and written by a coll…

An integrated conceptual framework for long‐term social–ecological research
The global reach of human activities affects all natural ecosystems, so that the environment is best viewed as a social–ecological system. Consequently, a more integrative approach to environmental science, one that bridges the biophysical and social domains, is sorely needed. Although models and frameworks for social–ecological systems exist, few are explicitly designed to guide a long‐term interdisciplinary research program. Here, we present an…
Resource abundance constraints on the early post-contact Cherokee population
A Local Analysis of Early-Eighteenth-Century Cherokee Settlement
Results of an original analysis of Cherokee town placement and population c. 1721 are presented. Period and contemporary information were analyzed using local statistics to produce multivalued, mappable characterizations of the intensity of the processes of town placement and population. The analysis focuses on the scale and the space in which these processes took place among the Cherokee in order to open the way for examining the legacy of human…

Social Science in the Context of the Long Term Ecological Research Program
This special issue of Society and Natural Resources brings the results of long-term ecological research with an explicit social dimension to the attention of the social scientific research community. Contributions are from the Baltimore Ecosystem Study LTER, the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER, the Coweeta LTER and the Northern Temperate Lakes LTER. The range of practice represented at these four sites serves to identify commonalities and difference…
Land Use Legacies and the Future of Southern Appalachia
Southern Appalachian forests have apparently recovered from extractive land use practices during the 19th and 20th centuries, yet the legacy of this use endures in terrestrial and aquatic systems of the region. The focus on shallow time or the telling of stories about the past circumscribes the ability to anticipate the most likely outcomes of the trajectory of change forecast for the Southeast as the “Old South” continues its transformation into…
Heuristic Mapping of Frontier Processes
The value of analytical cartography and, in particular, of fuzzy set theory is demonstrated with regard to developing a specifiable and repeatable conceptual framework for multicriteria land evaluation. After a review of the distinguishing mathematical attributes of fuzzy set theory, including the derivation of the most useful functions, its application to the assessment of a 170,000-km area of western Paraguay is described. Fuzzy set theory and …
Ethnoecology
This work examines subjects ranging from pastoralism to the use of medicinal plants to show that understanding the knowledge system of any people is essential to understanding their relation to the environment
From Principles to Practice
The Institutional Context of Irrigation in the Bajo Yaque del Norte Project, Dominican Republic
Work on irrigation water management in the semi-arid, northwest Dominican Republic with agrarian reform growers is described. Irrigation agriculture is presented as an institution where communication between users and suppliers is critical for establishing control over the resource and determining the purpose to which the resource is put. Maintaining communication between users and suppliers serves to realize public and private agent objectives, …

A Preliminary Look At Stone Circle Site Distribution in Montana
Many of the reports on stone circle sites to date have failed to consider their regional distribution, or have presented the results in such a manner as to make them truly interpretable only to the authors. Analysis at the regional level provides the basis on which inferences at the level of the site can be formulated. This paper is one attempt at such analysis on the regional level. Topics covered in this paper are (1) the possible association b…
