Omissão histórica e repressão psíquica em Boogie Nights de Paul Thomas Anderson
Exquisitely filmed in Altmanesque style and drawing on scenes from the films of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, Boogie Nights continues to this day to be proclaimed an ultra hip and daring look at the so-called Golden Age of pornography set of the 1970s. In this essay I attempt to document what this film leaves out of the historical record, and to show how historical suppression dovetails with psychic repression. Instead of history we are …
Remastering the Master
The essay examines the work of several prominent scholars of Alfred Hitchcock films and argues that the political ground staked out by queer and feminist critics of these films has become increasingly evacuated by male critics who, while often appropriating the insights of queer and feminist theory, attempt to restore Hitchcock to a position of mastery untroubled by the ideological contradictions present in the director’s work. The essay seeks to…
Feminism Without Women
In a series of essays scrutinizing feminist and post-structuralists positions, Tania Modleski examines "the myth of postfeminism" and its operation in popular culture, especially popular film and cultural studies. (First published in 1991.)
An Affair to Forget
This article looks at theories of melancholia to analyze “bromantic” comedies of the kind often associated with film producer, director, and writer Judd Apatow. Taking its title from the references to the film An Affair to Remember (dir. Leo McCarey, US, 1957) that run through the classic romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle (dir. Nora Ephron, US, 1993), this article suggests that in fact romantic comedy may itself be considered a melancholy genr…
Loving with a Vengeance
Upon its first publication, Loving with a Vengeance was a groundbreaking study of women readers and their relationship to mass-market romance fiction. Feminist scholar and cultural critic Tania Modleski has revisited her widely read book, bringing to this new edition a review of the issues that have, in the intervening years, shaped and reshaped questions of women's reading. With her trademark acuity and understanding of the power both of the mas…

Hitchcock and Selznick
and is the story of one of the oddest partnerships in Hollywood history, the union of a reticent, overweight Englishman with a flair for striking detail and a penchant for the perverse, and a dynamic movie mogul with a keen eye for successful entertainment on the grand scale. It began in 1938, when producer David O. Selznick agreed to bring director Alfred Hitchcock from England, where he was already gaining widespread acclaim for his 'little thr…

Time and Desire in the Woman's Film
Max Ophuls' 1948 film, Letter from an Unknown Woman, which is set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, begins late at night with the hero of the story, Stefan, returning by coach to his home and promising to fight a duel at dawn. That his attitude toward the situation is utterly frivolous is obvious from his remark as he steps out of the coach: Gentlemen, I don't so much mind being killed, but you know how I hate to get up in the morning.
