How Do We Make the River ‘Roman’? Changing Depositional Patterns in the Middle Thames Valley
This paper offers the first detailed examination of riverine depositional practice in the Roman Middle Thames, using a comprehensive, multi-period dataset of river finds. The study reveals an abrupt deviation from long-standing martial traditions, replaced largely by low-value coinage and coarse-ware pottery. Comparative analysis of two crossing sites, the urban Kingston bridge and the rural Goring ford, demonstrates that deposition was a highly …
Flowing through time
This paper presents the first long-term, multi-period analysis of riverine deposition within the Middle Thames, focusing on the period c. 2200 BC to 1100 AD. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset of 2,337 river finds, it investigates patterning in the selection and distribution of deposited objects, with particular emphasis on weapons, tools, and martial objects. This study identifies significant regional and chronological variation, as well as patte…
Stepping on the Gas
One method of producing bioenergy is through Anaerobic Digestion (AD) of plant, animal, and human waste in a biodigester. AD is a cost-effective method of simultaneously managing harmful waste, creating biogas for cooking, and producing nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser for agriculture. However, there is minimal exploration around how these household-scale biogas digesters, in Kenya and beyond, contribute to global bioenergy methane emissions - thi…
Transforming North-South research partnerships
The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) provided a mechanism for academia to undertake projects relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals but there have been limited opportunities to critically interrogate such projects. In this paper we will use the Technology Implementation Model for Energy to deconstruct the purpose, assumptions and expectations, engagement strategies, and reflective processes of four GCRF projects in order to better un…
Understanding the current market enablers for Nepal's biomass cookstove industry
This paper applies the market map tool to the Nepalese biomass improved cookstove (ICS) sector highlighting existing weaknesses in government policy and biomass cookstove market chains to provide recommendations to better address the social, economic, and cultural needs of users. This addresses the problem of low adoption rates of biomass ICS in Nepal. Our research objectives set out to explore the effectiveness of market maps designed for East A…
Time to Change
Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 - universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services by 2030 – represents a considerable challenge. Currently, 40% of the global population do not have access to sustainable energy sources, and instead rely on burning biomass to satisfy their energy needs. Despite a long history of energy technology for poverty-alleviation initiatives across the globe, many interventions fail at persuading…
Market mapping for improved cookstoves
The East African region has been a hub for the development and marketing of improved cookstoves since the 1980s. However, there are differences in the rates of uptake of stoves between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. This article uses a participatory approach to market mapping, identifying the key barriers to market growth. The findings illustrate common barriers of access to finance, but also differences between the countries in their stove value ch…
A retrospective analysis of responsible innovation for low-technology innovation in the Global South
The role of low-technology innovation in addressing global challenges is undervalued. Responsible innovation (RI) has the potential to direct low-technology innovation toward global challenges in the Global South, yet this possibility remains largely unexplored. Through a retrospective analysis, this article explores how researchers grapple with dimensions of an RI framework in a research project and highlights key areas for researchers to consid…
We cannot stop cooking”
Drawing on qualitative data from three contrasting sites in Benue state, Nigeria, this paper explores how and why cooking system use and priorities vary over time and space as well as the influence of household air pollution (HAP)-related health risks on fuel and stove choices. The findings indicated that cooking system choices were constrained by economic and access considerations linked to spatio-temporal variations in fuel cost, availability a…
We Learnt that Being Together Would Give us a Voice”
© 2019, © 2019 IAFFE. Improved cookstoves (ICS) have been promoted for several decades, with little success. Advocates looking to drive uptake encourage greater involvement of women in ICS enterprises, on the largely unproven premise that women’s participation in the value chain will enhance their financial bottom line while giving a boost to ICS sales. This paper tests the validity of that premise, using qualitative evidence from East Africa. Th…

Report on Recent Excavations at Peacock's Farm, Shippea Hill, Cambridgeshire
Peacock's Farm in the parish of Shippea Hill, Cambridgeshire, is situated in the SE. corner of the Fenland some 7 miles ENE. of Ely and about 20 miles almost due south of King's Lynn. The position of the site is shown in fig. 1, in which areas of alluvial deposit are reserved and more ancient deposits are obliquely shaded, marking the margin of the fen basin and in places islands, which break the monotony of the level fen. Crossing the map obliqu…
Towards fair, just and equitable energy ecosystems through smart monitoring of household-scale biogas plants in Kenya
Anaerobic biogas digestors offer a technological solution to facilitate modern, sustainable, and equitable energy access, efficiency, and transition pathways to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 – affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. In this paper we create critical evidence, through documenting insights from the Smart Biogas (SB) II project, that contributes to the introduction of (low cost) smart mete…
