  • Wages, economic development and the customary standard of life

    Frank Wilkinson•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2012

This paper examines empirically the evolution of the customary standard of life and how this relates to real wages and economic development. Its starting point is Sraffa's reintroduction of the classical notion of wages as the cost of reproducing labour, so that they are necessarily a charge on production. However, when considering a production system generating a surplus, Sraffa offered no explanation of how the surplus might be realised and dis…

  • Piero Sraffa and 'the true object of economics'

Stephanie Blankenburg, Richard Arena et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2012

This Special Issue is concerned with the work of Piero Sraffa and with recent developments in its interpretation, occasioned by the opening of the Sraffa Archives in late 1993.1 It brings together some of the contributions to a workshop on this theme that was sponsored by the Cambridge Journal of Economics and held in July 2010 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Piero Sraffa’s major work, Production of Commodities by Me…

  • Anglo-American corporate governance and the employment relationship

    Open Access•Simon Deakin, Richard Hobbs et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2006•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 16

The corporate governance environment in the UK and US is generally thought to be hostile to the emergence of cooperative employment relations of the kind exemplified by labour-management partnerships. We discuss case-study evidence from the UK which suggests that, contrary to this widespread perception, enduring and proactive partnerships may develop, in conditions where management can convince shareholders of the long-term gains from this approa…

  • HRM Complementarities and Innovative Performance in French and British Industry

Edward Lorenz, Jonathan Michie et al.•CHAPTER•Product innovation, interactive…•2004

A dominant theme in the high performance HRM literature concerns complementarities among individual practices and the positive performance benefits associated with adopting simultaneously a bundle of HRM practices. While there is little consensus over what practices should be included under the “high performance” label, most authors see employee representation and consultation as representing a traditional management approach. Moreover enterprise…

  • Against the New Economic Imperialism

Open Access•Jonathan Michie, Christine Oughton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2002•Citada por: 2

Classical political economy recognised that what needed analysing, explaining, and acting on was an economic system inextricably linked to the wider political and social systems. Smith and Ricardo, as well as Marx, saw class and the distribution of income as key. Neoclassical economics replaced these social and collective categories with the individual consumer and the marginal product of labour as the fundamental analytical categories-the "polit…

It uses these examples to examine why innovating firms have external links, why they have them with universities, which spatial mechanisms are significant in the place‐specific technology transfer links universitie…

Open Access•Shirley Dex, Paul Robson et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•1999•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 9

  • Equality, Efficiency and Economic Progress

    Open Access•Frank Wilkinson•CHAPTER•Transformation of the Communist…•1995

From the end of World War Two until the mid-1970s the wide consensus in advanced industrial countries was that an effective and equitable floor of employment rights was both socially and economically beneficial. Decent standards of pay and working conditions were regarded as having a central part to play in reducing exploitation and poverty and encouraging the more effective use of labour. Since the mid-1970s the climate of opinion, especially am…

  • Wages, government policy and unemployment

Jonathan Michie, Frank Wilkinson•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1995•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

In this paper we question the usefulness of what has become the new textbook orthodoxy—the ‘new Keynesian’ NAIRU theory. We then discuss the impact of the policy developments that follow from this orthodoxy, and argue that NAIRU theory has resulted in greater, not reduced, unemployment. Consequently, orthodox economic theory has added an upward twist to the stagnationist, high-unemployment ratchet

  • Employer Strategy and The Labour Market

    Jong-II You, Frank Wilkinson•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1994•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

The central feature of the ‘industrial district’ is the balance between competition and co-operation among firms. This paper addresses the role of competition and co-operation in the organization of economic activity. We first compare Alfred Marshall's notion of industrial district and that of contemporary writers. We then discuss the limits of competition in the presence of such problems as asset specificity, measurement problems and externaliti…

  • Trust' or Law? Towards an Integrated Theory of Contractual Relations between Firms

Simon Deakin, Chris Lane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Society•1994•Citada por: 6

Socio-legal studies of business contracting have profoundly affected our understanding of the form and functions of the law of contract. Empirical research has shown that firms frequently dispense with formal planning and make little recourse to the law to resolve contractual disputes, preferring flexibility as a basis for long-term co-operation.2 The orthodox or 'classical' model of contract law, in which contracting parties completely 'presenti…

The unwillingness of the United Kingdom to agree upon a programme of minimum regulatory standards in the labour market - as exemplified most recently in its apparent exemption from the Social Chapter of the Maastricht agreement - is a reflection of the erosion of employment rights under British governments since 1979, a process which is still continuing.
