The use of discretionary time in the primary school
The aim of this study was to examine how primary‐school teachers interpret the notion of discretionary time and how this interpretation relates to the amounts of time given to different subjects within the National Curriculum at Key Stage (KS)1 and 2. Head teachers from a wide range of primary schools responded to a questionnaire (161 head teachers, 46 per cent of the original sample). In addition, eight head teachers underwent extended interview…
Staying Ahead
This article analyzes the reform in England and Wales that changed the secondary school system from a selective type (with grammar and secondary modern schools) to a comprehensive type during the period 1965-74. It presents evidence of two possible middle-class tactics : resistance to the reform and using the reform to protect the middle-class advantage. Resistance took the forms of keeping grammar schools from being transformed into comprehensiv…

Future Lives of Truants
This paper examines early adult outcomes of truancy regarding family formation and health-related behaviour, and is based on data collected in the National Child Development Study, which surveyed all people in Great Britain born in the week 3-9 March 1958, at birth, and at ages 7, 11, 16 and 23. Truants compared to non-truants were found to be relatively more likely to have experienced marital breakdown by the age of 23. They had more children, a…
Occupational Outcomes of Truancy
This paper presents some findings of a study into early adult outcomes of truancy, which was based on the National Child Development Study, a longitudinal survey of all people in Great Britain born in the week 3rd-9th March 1958. It was found that truancy is associated with lower status occupations, less stable career patterns and more unemployment. Among those who were working, former truants' incomes were not lower, but they were considerably l…

S ummary . Longitudinal data contained in the National Child Development Study (NCDS) cohort was used in a Department of Education and Science (DES) funded investigation of whether changes of school adversely affect children's attainment and behaviour. There have been a number of studies which have investigated these effects but the results have been conflicting and confusing. Recently a series of major studies has shown that it may be especially…

School Attendance, Attainment and Behaviour
Data from the National Child Development Study are used to examine the relationship between school attendance, at the ages of 7 and 15, and reading and mathematics test scores and school behaviour at the age of 16. A relationship between attendance and attainment is found, which is reduced but remains statistically significant after allowance for related social factors. The relationship between 15-year attendance and attainment is reasonably cons…
Age Standardisation and Seasonal Effects in Mental Testing
S ummary . It is pointed out that there are two distinct types of age standardisations for tests of school attainment. One is concerned with allowing for differences in age between children tested at the same time, and the other is concerned with allowing for average changes in test scores with time of year. Standardisation procedures do not normally take account of this distinction. It is also shown that there is no increase in attainment scores…
