  • The Case for Use of Simple Difference Scores to Test the Significance of Differences in Mean Rates of Change in Controlled Repeated Measurements Designs

    John E Overall, Scott Tonidandel•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2010

A previous Monte Carlo study examined the relative powers of several simple and more complex procedures for testing the significance of difference in mean rates of change in a controlled, longitudinal, treatment evaluation study. Results revealed that the relative powers depended on the correlation structure of the simulated repeated measurements. Tests on dropout-weighted linear slope coefficients fitted to all of the available measurements for …

  • Tests That are Robust against Variance Heterogeneity in k × 2 Designs with Unequal Cell Frequencies

    Open Access•John E Overall, Robert S Atlas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

Heterogeneity of variance produces serious bias in conventional analysis of variance tests of significance when cell frequencies are unequal. Welch in 1938 and 1947 proposed an adjusted t test for the difference between two means when cell frequencies and population variances are both unequal. This article describes two ways to use the Welch t to evaluate the significance of the main effect for two treatments across k levels of a concomitant fact…

  • Power of a Test That is Robust against Variance Heterogeneity

    Open Access•John E Overall, Robert S Atlas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

Welch (1947) proposed an adjusted t test that can be used to correct the serious bias in Type I error protection that is otherwise present when both sample sizes and variances are unequal. The implications of the Welch adjustment for power of tests for the difference between two treatments across k levels of a concomitant factor are evaluated in this article for k x 2 designs with unequal sample sizes and unequal variances. Analyses confirm that,…

  • An Investigation of the Structural Validity of Loevinger's Model and Measure of Ego Development

    Open Access•Diane M Novy, Ronald G Frankiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1994

This study demonstrates the use of structural equation modeling for investigating a hierarchical model of personality based on Loevinger's (1976) conceptualization. This model was constructed to have a multifactorial and hierarchical structure in which the ego development construct served as the source of covariation for specific personality constructs of impulse control, interpersonal style, conscious preoccupations, and cognitive style. This mo…

  • Formulae for Estimating Rater Reliability from the Significance of Treatment Effects

    Open Access•Kevin N Magee, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1992

The ability to discriminate true treatment effects in clinical research depends on the reliability of measurements. Rating scales are often used to assess treatment effects, but raters differ in their individual reliabilities. Rather than considering a rating instrument to have inherent reliability, it is important to focus on the reliability of the instrument in the hands of particular raters. Formulae for estimating individual rater reliabiliti…

  • Comparison of a Two-Stage and Three-Stage Interim-Analysis Procedure

    Open Access•John E Overall, Robert S Atlas•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

A statistical model for combining p values from multiple tests of significance is used to define rejection and acceptance regions for two-stage and three-stage sampling plans. Type I error rates, power, frequencies of early termination decisions, and expected sample sizes are compared. Both the two-stage and three-stage procedures provide appropriate protection against Type I errors. The two-stage sampling plan with its single interim analysis en…

  • Tests of Significance for Differences in Counts of Rare Events in Two Treatment Groups

Open Access•Kritina L Holden, Kritina Holden et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1987

Counts of rare events tend to have Poisson or J-shaped distributions that render parametric assumptions questionable. Six different methods for testing the significance of the difference between location parameters for two such distributions are evaluated in this article. A binomial test for the difference between means is known to be the most powerful unbiased test when population distributions are truly Poisson; however, it appears extremely no…

  • MMPI-168 Factor Score Profiles for Major Diagnostic Groups

    Open Access•Camille Lloyd, Edward J Mclaughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1983

The purpose of the present study was to examine the MMPI-168 factor score profiles for groups of psychiatric patients whose clinical scale score profiles matched prototype patterns for schizophrenia ( N = 199), depression ( N = 215), and personality disorder ( N = 126). The MMPI-168 factor score profiles for a sample of 27 psychiatric outpatients meeting DSM III criteria for borderline personality were also examined. Suggestion of significant psy…

  • An Investigation Of The Consistency Of Diagnostic Concepts Among Five Child And Adolescent Psychiatrists

    John E Overall, Betty Pfefferbaum•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1982

Five experienced child and adolescent psychiatrists provided descriptions on a 63-item symptom and behavior rating scale of their concepts of typical patients belonging to 18 different diagnostic groups. An empirical classification of the 18 diagnoses into six major categories was accomplished by transposed (Q-type) factor analysis of the mean profiles for the 18 childhood psychiatric disorders. The consistency of the diagnostic concepts held by …

  • Simple F Tests for Main Effects and Interactions in 2 × 2 × k Contingency Tables

    Open Access•John E Overall, Stephen J O'Keefe et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1982

A method of controlling for the effects of a nuisance variable in testing the significance of treatment effects on a discrete binary response is described. Proportions of “success” responses in two treatment groups are standardized relative to an estimate of the sampling variance at each level of the concomitant variable, and an unweighted-means analysis of variance is used to test the main effect for treatments and the interaction of treatments …

  • Common Misconceptions Concerning The Analysis Of Covariance

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1977

Four misconceptions about the requirements for proper use of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) are examined by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Conclusions are that ANCOVA does not require covariates to be measured without error, that ANCOVA can be used effectively to adjust for initial group differences that result from nonrandom assignment which is dependent on observed covariate scores, that ANCOVA does not provide unbiased estimates of true tre…

  • Adequacy of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale for Distinguishing Lesser Forms of Psychopathology

    Open Access•Charles B Pull, John E Overall•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

The adequacy of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale for distinguishing among lesser forms of psychopathology, as well as among the more serious forms, was investigated. 31 psychiatrists provided symptom descriptions for 13 clinical syndromes which were selected to span the full range of inpatient and outpatient psychopathology. The symptom descriptions included, in addition to the standard 18 scales of the rating scale, 24 additional symptom- and …

  • Unreliability of difference scores

    John E Overall, J Arthur Woodward•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1975•Citada por: 10

The use of difference scores to measure change in experimental research has often been faulted on the grounds that errors of measurement are additive. In research concerned with differences between experimental treatment groups, the loss in reliability due to calculation of difference scores is not a valid concern because the power of tests of significance is maximum when the reliability of the difference scores is zero

Good simple structure is the natural consequence of fitting hyperplanes to cluster centroids in analyses of data in which distinct cluster configuration exists. The oblique powered vector factor analysis utilizes a preliminary direct orthogonal solution to identify clusters, passes primary axes through the cluster centroids and produces final oblique reference structure by simple trans- formation. The hyperplane for each oblique factor is fitted …
