Open Access•James Forty, Mpho Keetile•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2022

Malaria is a major public health concern in Malawi. Data were derived from the multi-stage cross-sectional Malaria Indicator Survey (MIS) conducted in 2017, which followed ITN distribution in 2012 and 2015. Of the 3860 sampled women aged 15–49 years, 88% (3398/3860) and 64% (2473/3860) reported that t…

  • Breaking Barriers to Healthcare Access

    Open Access•Betregiorgis Zegeye, Ziad El‐Khatib et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Background: In low-income countries such as Benin, most people have poor access to healthcare services. There is scarcity of evidence about barriers to accessing healthcare services in Benin. Therefore, we examined the magnitude of the problem of access to healthcare services and its associated factors. Methods: We utilized data from the 2017-2018 Benin Demographic and Health Survey (n = 15,928). We examined the associations between the demograph…

  • Sub-regional disparities in the use of antenatal care service in Mauritania

Open Access•Gebretsadik Shibre, Betregiorgis Zegeye et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

A disproportionately lower ANC4+ utilization was observed among women who were poor, uneducated, living in rural areas and regions such as Guidimagha. As a result, policymakers need to design interventions that will enable disadvantaged subpopulations to benefit from ANC4+ utilization to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) to 140/100, 000 live births by 2030

  • Partner faithfulness and sexual reproductive health practices in Botswana

Open Access•Motsholathebe Bowelo, Serai Daniel Rakgoasi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2020

The main aim of this study was to test whether perception of partner infidelity prompts people to adopt behaviour that is meant to compensate for the increased risk of infection posed by their partner’s infidelity; or whether it prompts people to engage in behaviour that magnifies the risk associated with partner infidelity. Data used were derived from the fourth and latest Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS IV) conducted in 2013. The sample consi…

  • An assessment of sexual risk behaviours among circumcised and uncircumcised men before and after the implementation of the safe male circumcision programme in Botswana

    Mpho Keetile•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2020

HIV/AIDS prevalence is still high in Botswana. The main aim of this study was to assess and compare sexual risk behaviours of circumcised and uncircumcised men before and after the launch of the safe male circumcision programme. Data used for analyses were derived from the 2008 and 2013 Botswana AIDS Impact Surveys. Modified Poisson regression analysis was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) as measures of association between circumcision statu…

  • The impact of HIV antiretroviral treatment perception on risky sexual behaviour in Botswana

Gobopamang Letamo, Mpho Keetile et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2017

The aim of this article is to investigate the impact of ART perception on risky sexual behaviours in Botswana. Using binary logistic regression analysis controlling for individual characteristics, the results tend to support the hypothesis that ART misconceptions do not necessarily increase risky sexual behaviours. In particular, the study findings suggest the belief that ARVs cure HIV and AIDS and that people on ARVs should not always use condom…
