“You're not necessarily pregnant”
Misconceptions about what emergency contraception does are common and have resulted in policy efforts to restrict access. Understanding the beliefs and reasoning behind people's uncertainty and lack of knowledge about emergency contraception helps shed light on key misconceptions and how advocates, providers, and researchers can improve clarity. We conducted a secondary analysis using previously collected qualitative data from card sort and vigne…
Availability of Protocols Supporting Transgender and Gender-Expansive Patients
Many publicly supported clinics providing contraceptive services have adopted protocols supportive of transgender patients, although this masks significant variation by clinic type. Planned Parenthood clinics report widespread availability of transgender-inclusive services, whereas health department clinics report low availability. Furthermore, our findings suggest that bans on youth access to gender-affirming care may limit the availability of t…
Contraceptive care post-Dobbs
Access to contraception is an essential component of reproductive autonomy. Abortion restrictions such as those introduced in some states following the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision have spillover effects on broader sexual and reproductive health service provision, such as contraceptive services. We conducted 36 in-depth interviews with key staff at publicly supported clinics providing contraceptive services in the United States, examining their…
Assessing the Provision of Person-Centered Contraceptive Care at Publicly Supported Clinics Providing Contraceptive Services in the United States
Cost-related barriers to sexual and reproductive health care
Financial barriers can inhibit reproductive autonomy. This study examines the role of financial barriers on Arizona individuals' experiences accessing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care. We recruited individuals who may have experienced barriers when accessing SRH care in 2019 to participate in three interviews at six-to-nine-month intervals beginning in the summer of 2020. Our analyses focused on respondent strategies to mitigate cost bar…
Improving abortion underreporting in the USA
Abortion is a difficult-to-measure behaviour with extensive underreporting in surveys, which compromises the ability to study and monitor it. We aimed to improve understanding of how women interpret and respond to survey items asking if they have had an abortion. We developed new questions hypothesised to improve abortion reporting, using approaches that aim to clarify which experiences to report; reduce the stigma and sensitivity of abortion; re…

Disruptions and opportunities in sexual and reproductive health care
While providers faced many challenges, they also described opportunities to innovate and rethink standard of care protocols that may continue to shape sexual and reproductive health care even after the pandemic abates
Randomized experimental testing of new survey approaches to improve abortion reporting in the U nited S tates
More work is needed to improve reporting of abortion in future surveys, particularly as abortion access becomes increasingly restricted in the United States. Despite this study's null results, it provides a promising path for future efforts to improve abortion measurement. It is proof of concept for testing new approaches in a less expensive, faster, and more flexible format than embedding changes in existing national fertility surveys
Qualitative Data Sharing
Expectations to share data underlying studies are increasing, but research on how participants, particularly those in qualitative research, respond to requests for data sharing is limited. We studied research participants' willingness to, understanding of, and motivations for data sharing. As part of a larger qualitative study on abortion reporting, we conducted interviews with 64 cisgender women in two states in early 2020 and asked for consent …
Psychosocial Support, Sexual Health, and HIV Risk among Older Men Who Have Sex with Younger Men
This study examines the extent to which older males are willing to offer psychosocial and sexual health promoting support to their younger male partners, as well as the individual and relationship-level factors associated with this willingness to provide support. In total, 324 men over the age of 45, who currently or previously had younger male sexual partners, completed an anonymous online survey. Results show that participants were most willing…

The Sexual and Reproductive Health Burden Index
Parenting and child-caretaking among black men who have sex with men and associated sexual and reproductive health factors
The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the prevalence of parenting and child-caretaking among a sample of black men who have sex with men (MSM), as well as associations between parenting roles and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) factors. Parenting and SRH data were derived from a survey of 199 black MSM. Nearly half of the sample reported being a father or father-figure (44.4%), almost a third indicated serving as caretaker of …
Racial and Socioeconomic Inequity in the Spatial Distribution of LGBTQ Human Services
Exploring Transgender Legal Name Change as a Potential Structural Intervention for Mitigating Social Determinants of Health Among Transgender Women of Color
Family change and the state of family sociology
Profound changes in family-related behavior have occurred over the past 40 years in the US. To evaluate the extent to which family sociology has kept pace with these changes the article first reviews four prominent sociology journals from 1993 to 2011, investigating the range of family types covered in published articles over nearly two decades and the kinds of approaches taken to study non-traditional families. The article then presents two case…
