Electric Empires
This article explores the emergence of the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) subculture, and how it transitioned from being perceived as a deviant subculture into a more legitimate culture industry. Using a historical analysis of documents, interviews with industry professionals, and ethnographic observations at EDM events; we explore the process by which this transition occurred. This research is a critical study of tourism at four cemeteries in the Los Angeles area between 2013 and 2019: Hollywood Forever, Forest Lawn in Glendale, Forest Lawn in Hollywood, and Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. Derrida's philosophical conception of deconstruction is presented, followed by a discussion and assessment of the arguments for a Marx-deconstruction articulation. I argue that such an articulation is not supportable due to a fundamental incompatibility between Marxism and Derrida's Saussurean-based conception of language and meaning.
