Obesity management and the Health at Every Size ® approach
The Health at Every Size® (HAES) approach is briefly discussed in the recently updated Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines but seems to lack recognition. Here, we discuss issues participating in these circumstances and how they are likely to hinder their integration into future clinical practice and health policies. The reluctance among some health professionals to reconcile size acceptance with lifestyle changes and health improv…
Development and cognitive testing of a food-frequency questionnaire to assess intake of plant-based protein foods among older adults
Objectives: To develop a web-based food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) measuring intake of plant-based protein foods (PBP) among older adults from the province of Quebec, Canada. Design: The questionnaire was adapted from an existing self-administered FFQ and first underwent expert panel evaluation for face and content validity. Then, three phases of cognitive testing were conducted in French, using the probe and think aloud approaches. Between ea…
Associations between intuitive eating, overall diet quality, and physical health indicators
Intuitive eating is a positive approach to eating involving high responsiveness to hunger and satiety cues. Although the association between intuitive eating and many psychological health indicators is well-documented, its associations with overall diet quality and physical health indicators are less explored. This study aimed to assess whether intuitive eating is associated with adherence to Canada's Food Guide recommendations and with physical …
Children’s self-reported exposure to sugary beverage advertisements and association with intake across six countries before and during the Covid-19 pandemic
Exposure to digital advertisements for sugary beverages increased from 2019 to 2021 in most countries, and exposure was associated with sugary beverage intake. Reducing children's exposure to advertising of less healthy foods, including on digital media, may reduce sugary beverage intake
Associations between mind-body practice engagement and diet quality
Development and validation of a questionnaire assessing eating pleasure dimensions in the adult French-speaking population of the province of Québec, Canada
Factors influencing engagement and dietary behaviour change of mothers and their children in a blog-delivered healthy eating intervention
Objective: A randomised controlled trial found no evidence of an impact of a blog written by a registered dietitian (RD) on vegetables and fruit and milk and alternatives (e.g. soya-based beverages, yogurt and cheese) consumption – two food groups included in the 2007 version of the Canadian Food Guide – in mothers and their children compared with a control condition. To investigate these null findings, the current study explored participants’ pe…
Individuals with self-determined motivation for eating have better overall diet quality
Changes in diet quality and food security among adults during the Covid-19–related early lockdown
Contrary to our hypotheses, diet quality has slightly improved and prevalence of food insecurity was reduced in this sample of adults from Quebec during the COVID-19-related early lockdown. These results may be generalizable only to relatively healthy populations.
Long‐term effects of a healthy eating blog in mothers and children
In the context of low consumption of vegetables and fruits and milk and alternatives among Canadian mothers and children, novel strategies are needed to improve maternal and child nutrition. This study evaluated the long-term effects of an evidence-informed healthy eating blog on dietary intakes and food-related behaviours of mothers and their child. The study presents a secondary outcome analysis of a randomised controlled trial in which 84 moth…
A cross-sectional survey examining motivation and beliefs to participating in a web-based prospective cohort study on nutrition and health among individuals with a low socioeconomic status
The development of a positive attitude and a high PBC towards participation in the NutriQuébec project will be necessary to obtain representative data of low SES adults
Trimester-Specific Assessment of Diet Quality in a Sample of Canadian Pregnant Women
The present study aimed to (1) examine changes in diet quality throughout pregnancy and (2) identify maternal characteristics associated with trimester-specific diet quality. Pregnant women ( n = 79) were recruited in their 1st trimester of pregnancy and completed, at each trimester, three web-based 24-hour dietary recalls, from which the Canadian Healthy Eating Index (HEI) was calculated. Physical activity, nutrition knowledge, and socio-demogra…
Impact of pleasure-oriented messages on food choices
Promoting fruit and vegetable intake in childbearing age women at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus
This randomised controlled trial verified the efficacy of an implementation intentions intervention ( n = 24) to promote fruit and vegetable consumption among childbearing age women at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus against a control condition based on the question-behaviour effect ( n = 26). There was only a significant time effect ( F(2,85) = 5.69, p = 0.0048). Both groups increased their vegetable consumption compared to baseline at 3 …
Assessing the relative validity of a new, web-based, self-administered 24 h dietary recall in a French-Canadian population
Objective To assess the relative validity of a new, web-based, self-administered 24 h dietary recall, the R24W, for assessment of energy and nutrient intakes among French Canadians. Design Each participant completed a 3d food record (FR) and the R24W on three occasions over a 4-week period. Intakes of energy and of twenty-four selected nutrients assessed by both methods were compared. Setting Québec City metropolitan area. Subjects Fifty-seven wo…
Social support for healthy eating
Objective The present study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire assessing social support for healthy eating in a French-Canadian population. Design A twenty-one-item questionnaire was developed. For each item, participants were asked to rate the frequency, in the past month, with which the actions described had been done by family and friends in two different environments: (i) at home and (ii) outside of home. The content was evaluated …
Is eating pleasure compatible with healthy eating? A qualitative study on Quebecers' perceptions
Establishing a food addiction diagnosis using the Yale Food Addiction Scale
Development and validation of a nutrition knowledge questionnaire for a Canadian population
Objective The present study aimed to develop and validate a nutrition knowledge questionnaire in a sample of French Canadians from the province of Quebec, taking into account dietary guidelines. Design A thirty-eight-item questionnaire was developed by the research team and evaluated for content validity by an expert panel, and then administered to respondents. Face validity and construct validity were measured in a pre-test. Exploratory factor a…
Development and validation of the Perceived Food Environment Questionnaire in a French-Canadian population
Objective The present study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire assessing perceived food environment in a French-Canadian population. Design A questionnaire, the Perceived Food Environment Questionnaire, was developed assessing perceived accessibility to healthy (nine items) and unhealthy foods (three items). A pre-test sample was recruited for a pilot testing of the questionnaire. For the validation study, another sample was recruited …
Validity and reliability of a brief self-reported questionnaire assessing fruit and vegetable consumption among pregnant women
The FVQ has acceptable validity and test-retest reliability values, but seems to underestimate FV servings in pregnant women. It represents an interesting alternative for researchers or clinicians interested in estimating quickly FV intake among pregnant women, such as in large trials or during prenatal visits. The FVQ should however be coupled with other self-reported measures, such as a food record, for assessing precise individual FV intake

Comparison of two techniques for measurement of visceral adipose tissue cross‐sectional areas by computed tomography
Most computed tomography (CT) scanners used today are able to accurately measure adipose tissue (AT) areas at any site of the body. However, first generation CT scanners used by some medical centers are not equipped with appropriate software allowing the measurements of AT areas. The aim of this study was to validate a technique of AT area measurements independent from CT scanner software. Abdominal AT areas were recorded with CT in a sample of 3…
Eating Behaviors and Indexes of Body Composition in Men and Women from the Québec Family Study
Objective : To put into relationship the dietary and anthropometric profile of men and women with their eating behaviors (cognitive dietary restraint, disinhibition, and susceptibility to hunger) and to assess whether gender and obesity status influence these associations. Research Methods and Procedures : Anthropometric measurements (including visceral adipose tissue accumulation), dietary profile (3‐day food record), and eating behaviors (Three…
