In studying this process, I have found that students who are female and/or of color encounter greater difficulties because they frequently suffer from a problem I term identity dissonance. Udry (2000, henceforward Udry), claims to have established that sex dimorphic behavior is produced by prenatal exposure to varying levels of testosterone. This study demonstrates the inadequacy of the traditional theory of childhood socialization and identity formation, which holds that children are socialized to internalize the key parameters of their parents' identities.
