Comparing organizational democracy in Norway and Mondragon
We have been asked to compare and contrast the Norwegian system of industrial democracy with the Mondragon federated corporation of worker cooperatives to arrive at a realistic appraisal of what can be learned from both systems and to discern the lessons to be learned for other nations and other initiatives. In doing so, the kinds of lessons that are needed for the emerging system of broad-based employee share ownership and industrial participati…
Theories of Participatory Democracy and the Kibbutz
This chapter examines changes in the implementation of kibbutz democracy in light of the theoretical controversy between the realistic-empirical approach to democracy and the more recently developed participatory-democratic theories of self-management. Both the realistic-empirical theories of democracy and the participatory-democratic theories developed as a reaction to the gap between the reality of the Western parliamentary democracies and the …

Worksite Segregation and Performance-Related Attitudes
This article explores the effects of structural inequality on organizational outcomes by examining the relationship between worksite segregation and performance-related attitudes by gender, race, and ethnicity. We use a new data set based on detailed surveys of 21,000 U.S. employees among 207 worksites in 14 companies gathered between 2001 and 2006. To measure workplace segregation, the study used the Duncan dissimilarity index and composition me…

Is Disability Disabling in All Workplaces? Workplace Disparities and Corporate Culture
Using nearly 30,000 employee surveys from fourteen companies, we find disability is linked to lower average pay, job security, training, and participation in decisions, and to more negative attitudes toward the job and company. Disability gaps in attitudes vary substantially, however, across companies and worksites, with no attitude gaps in worksites rated highly by all employees for fairness and responsiveness. The results indicate that corporat…
The Political Economy of Employee Ownership in the United States
This study examines the development of economic democracy in the United States since the 1700s with particular emphasis on the last 30 years. The particular focus is on employee ownership, although the phenomenon of profit sharing receives some attention. The nature of research and documentation on the subject is reviewed. The study concludes that research in the area has emphasized narrative studies of particular companies and sectors until the …

Employee Ownership and the Future of Unions
In the early 1970s employee ownership was on the fringes of public consciousness. Within the last few years, in various forms, employee ownership has emerged as a growing trend demanding attention from Congress, management, and union and community leaders. Over this same period the reaction of union leaders has shifted from indifference mingled with skepticism or hostility to growing interest balanced by ambivalence. The first step toward union p…

Worker Ownership and Public Policy
This article examines the development of expanding support for worker ownership in the United States. The authors provide a brief review of the various types of legislation, both at the state and federal levels, drafted on worker ownership. They also provide a discussion of the problems in establishing and maintaining a worker‐owned firm such as worker access to the idea of worker ownership, time to evaluate, discuss, and learn about the proposal…
