From formulaic collective address to plural pronoun
This paper examines a little-known composite second-person plural pronoun that has received no systematic attention in the historical-linguistic literature to date: among(st)-you . Drawing on a broad range of textual sources, we first map the geographical distribution of this pronoun across the anglophone world. This article revisits the provenance of the preverbal imperfective aspect marker ka , which characterizes the French-lexicon creoles of the Lesser Antilles and French Guiana and sets them apart from those of Haiti, Louisiana, and the Indian Ocean, which instead employ reflexes of après ‘after’. New evidence from the extinct Dutch-lexified creole Skepi has brought to light the pronoun or as its third person plural form. This article proposes that or is a cognate of standard Dutch haar ‘her’, which in Early Modern Dutch also functioned as a plural pronoun meaning ‘them, their’ (present-day standard Dutch hun∼hen ). This article investigates the origin of West Flemish composite plural pronouns of the type winder ‘we’, jinder~ginder ‘you’, and zinder ‘they’. These forms are of particular interest to contact linguistics, given that very similar ones found their way into the three Dutch-lexicon creoles that were once spoken in the Caribbean. A New Perspective on the Linguistic Profile of the Curaçaoan Sephardim, 1650–1750
This article looks at the language(s) spoken in the homes of the Sephardic Jews of Curaçao in the period between ca. 1650 and 1750, i.e., the period preceding the diffusion of Papiamentu as the native language of the Curaçaoan society at large, including the Sephardim. A number of supply and demand-side indicators provide support for heroin's 're-incubation' in an era of crack cocaine's decline. The present paper assesses the extent to which these and other trends converge with reports of heroin market participants operating on the streets of a large midwestern American city.
