  • Beyond Sacrifice Zones

Open Access•Maria Akchurin, Juanita Vivas Bastidas•ARTICLE•Contexts•2025

In Chicago's environmental sacrifice zones, activists and residents are rethinking pollution through a cumulative impact lens to capture the multiple, overlapping harms affecting fenceline communities, organize resistance, and make remediation demands

  • Mining, Water Conflicts, and Climate Change in Chile’s Atacama Desert

    Maria Akchurin•ARTICLE•Current History•2025

Global demand for lithium and copper is rising, fueled by the renewable energy transition. Chile is the top producer of copper and the second-largest producer of lithium in the world. It is also recognized as the most water-stressed country in the Americas. Socio-environmental conflicts around water, more visible over the past several decades, are intensifying. While some view water primarily as a productive resource that will enable Chile to kee…

  • How Local Perceptions Contribute to Urban Environmental Activism

Juanita Vivas Bastidas, Maria Akchurin et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2024•Referencias: 74

In this paper, we examine how structural and social-psychological factors combine to motivate urban environmental activism. Specifically, we argue that residents’ everyday perceptions about environmental, social, and political conditions in their neighborhoods and cities are connected to their likelihood of involvement in environmental collective action. We use logistic regression models and original survey data from the 2021 Cook County Communit…

  • Contested Infrastructures

    Open Access•Maria Akchurin•ARTICLE•City and Community•2022•Referencias: 15

Activists opposing urban water privatization often continue organizing even after water infrastructure returns to the public sector. Why? Analyzing water privatization and renationalization in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina, I argue that as these policy changes unfolded, activists from neighborhoods lacking necessary infrastructure organized not only about privatization but also around place. Place-based mobilization emerged from a longstanding …

  • Mining and Defensive Mobilization

    Maria Akchurin•ARTICLE•Sociology of Development•2020

Opposition to the social and environmental impacts of large-scale mining has become more visible in Chile since the early 1990s, yet not all mining projects catalyze mobilization. Building on the concept of defensive mobilization, I argue that opposition is more likely when a project is perceived as a threat to some members of a community. Using a data set of all major mining projects submitted for environmental licensing since environmental impa…

  • Policy Effects of Resistance against Mega-Projects in Latin America

In this introductory article, we present the special issue and outline our research agenda on extractive development, social mobilization, and policy impact in Latin America. We propose a shift in analytical focus from the study of resistance to studying the policy and institutional impacts of mobilization. We outline possible outcomes of interest and conditions contributing to the attainment of policy and institutional change. These conditions i…

  • Constructing the Rights of Nature

    Open Access•Maria Akchurin•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2015•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 19

In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to grant legal rights to nature. In this article, I examine how this happened. I show that while proponents of nature's rights acted during a key political moment, their efforts were successful due to the presence of environmentalist social movements that elevated the environmental agenda at the national level during prior decades, and due to the power of indigenous organizations and their call to recogni…

  • Pathways to Empowerment

    Open Access•Maria Akchurin, Cheol-Sung Lee•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2013•Citada por: 20•Referencias: 73

This article examines how different repertoires of women's activism influence gender earnings equality across countries. We develop a typology of three forms of mobilization-professionalized women's activism, labor women's activism, and women's activism in popular movements-emphasizing distinct actors, patterns of claims-making, and inter-organizational ties among women's organizations and other civil society groups in multi-organizational fields…
