Exploring Biological and Ecological Components of Sheep Astragalus Size and Shape Variation Using 3D Geometric Morphometrics
One of the key challenges in the archaeology of sheep domestication is reconstructing the complex history of environmental and anthropogenic transformations undergone by sheep since the beginning of the domestication process of their wild ancestors. In recent years, GMM studies of sheep astragalus bones have contributed to our understanding of morphological differences between wild and domestic caprine species. However, the respective influences …
Topological Data Analysis and Multiple Kernel Learning for Species Identification of Modern and Archaeological Small Ruminants
The faunal remains from numerous Holocene archaeological sites across southwest Asia frequently include the bones of various wild and domestic ungulates, such as sheep, goats, ibexes, roe deer and gazelles. These assemblages may provide insight into hunting and animal husbandry strategies and offer palaeoecological information on ancient human societies. However, the skeletons of these taxa are highly similar in appearance, which presents a chall…

Using cattle for traction and transportduring the Neolithic period. Contribution of the study of the first and second phalanxes
During the Neolithic period, cattle were used not only for their meat and their milk but also for their strength. Unfortunately, apart from the discovery of specific instruments (yokes, travois, wheels, ards, etc.), it is not easy to demonstrate archaeologically their use for work. Nevertheless, the bone pathologies related to this activity can be analyzed. The methodological approach employed in this study is based on multivariate analyses (PCA)…
Data Sharing Reveals Complexity in the Westward Spread of Domestic Animals across Neolithic Turkey
This study presents the results of a major data integration project bringing together primary archaeozoological data for over 200,000 faunal specimens excavated from seventeen sites in Turkey spanning the Epipaleolithic through Chalcolithic periods, c. 18,000-4,000 cal BC, in order to document the initial westward spread of domestic livestock across Neolithic central and western Turkey. From these shared datasets we demonstrate that the westward …
THE MALIA DAYS The Malia Days, organized by the Ecole française d'Athènes on November 2 and 3, 2007, focused on the organisation of space and the exploitation of resources, themes that allowed uniting the approaches of current work on two different scales, those of agglomeration and urbanism, on the one hand, and of the territorial organisation, on the other. All the contributions are concerned with ongoing research, of recent or forthcoming publ…

Origine e sviluppo dell'allevamento nel Vicino Oriente
Early Animal Husbandry in the Northern Levant
Jerf el Ahmar dated to early tenth millenium BP (PPNA) lies on two natural mounds on the east bank of the Euphrates in northern Syria. Excavations revealed the architectural remains of several buildings representing a number of phases. A transition between round houses and rectangular houses was observed through out the sequence. Flint tools resemble those from Mureybet III, and include arrow heads, scrapers and blades wich a "polish". Impression…
Comparison of the measurements of the main species of farming stock indicates that these animals appeared in stages. The present state of our knowledge suggests that the first to be domesticated was the goat (at the end of the 8th mill.) followed by the sheep (middle of the 7th mill.), cattle (end of the 7th mill.) and finally the pig (start of the 6th mill.). If the origins of domestication of goat and pig cannot for the moment be related to any…
Cannibalism in the Neolithic
Cannibalism is a provocative interpretation put forth repeatedly for practices at various prehistoric sites, yet it has been so poorly supported by objective evidence that later, more critical reviews almost invariably reject the proposal. The basic data essential to a rigorous assessment of a cannibalism hypothesis include precise contextual information, analysis of postcranial and cranial remains of humans and animals, and detailed bone modific…
Unusually well preserved animal bone accumulations, representing the refuse of single butchering episodes, have been found in Neolithic levels (Vth and IVth millennia b.c.) of a cave in Southern France. These bone clusters contain the remains of one or a few individuals, either domestic sheep or wild boars. The integrity of these features has been checked through conjoining of fragments, rearticula- tion of bones and horizontal and vertical plots…
