Exploring Empathy, Compassion Fatigue, and Burnout among Feral Cat Caregivers
Based on four years of ethnographic observations, interviews, and full participation, this research elucidates the emotional dynamics and consequences of feral cat caregiving across a variety of interactional settings. Incorporating both attribution and labeling theory, this article examines the negotiation of deviant labels in small groups, with emphasis on how that process is influenced by attributions of responsibility and the gender of group members. The research presented in this article focuses on understanding the lives of women who transit from heterosexual marriage to lesbian identity. The authors explore the social and interpersonal contexts in which lesbians enter, exist in, and exit heterosexual marital relationships. This research, based on a content analysis of 4,445 newspaper articles, examines the images that emerge from stories of criminal gangs and societys responses to them. Eight recurrent themes were identifed. It was discovered that articles devoted to the coverage of gang crimes were outnumbered by stories dealing with various community responses. This research examines the social category of “psycho” as it applies to women in psycho‐femme thrillers, a film genre identified in the analysis. Psycho‐femme thrillers use a female lead who is in social and psychological conflict with other film characters, who are usually women. Age, Differential Expectations, and Crime Desistance
We specify an individual‐level model linking crime desistance to estimates of legal risk, differential expectations, degree of past success at legitimate and criminal pursuits, and age. OLS and logistic regression procedures are used to estimate the model using longitudinal data on serious, previously imprisoned offenders. The influence of fear of rape, perceived risk of rape, and prior victimization on the presence of handguns in single female‐headed households is examined. On the basis of previous research, a causal model that includes a number of control factors is developed and tested. Fear of the drunk driver
This paper analyzes public perceptions of drunk driving with respect to risk of being victimized, seriousness of the offense, and fear of being victimized. This is based on a state‐wide survey of Louisiana driver's license holders. Compared to other crimes, even murder and rape, it was found that drunk driving ranked highest in its fear invoking quality.
