  • Stereotypical Home Making

Open Access•Daddy Dibinga Kalamba, Séverine Marguin•ARTICLE•Eastern African Literary and…•2025

In recent decades, television series in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire have emerged as influential mass media forms with broad audiences, driven by a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry in these countries. In this paper, we study series belonging to the soap opera genre, depicting everyday family stories that thematise current, sometimes controversial, social issues in the stories of the main characters. Following a sociospatial approach, we take a …

  • Refiguring the Production Regime of Soap-Operas

    Open Access•Séverine Marguin, Daddy Dibinga•ARTICLE•Space and Culture•2025•Referencias: 8

This article examines from the sociospatial perspective the West African soap operas industry from Senegal and Ivory Coast which emerged 10 years ago amid the globalization of TV and film industries. Using refiguration theory, we explore the spatial and power dynamics shaping this emerging production regime beyond national borders, at the intersection of different territories and scales. Based on multisited ethnographic fieldwork on film sets and…

  • Handbook of Qualitative and Visual Methods in Spatial Research

Open Access•Anna Juliane Heinrich, Séverine Marguin et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Handbook of Qualitative and…•2024

Listening, experiencing, drawing or interpreting spaces: narratives, experiences, visualizations and discourses can be helpful for the empirical investigation of spaces. This interdisciplinary handbook presents a broad spectrum of established methods and innovative method development to capture and understand different facets of spaces. Instructive explanations and concrete examples make the varied qualitative methods of spatial research understa…

  • The Refiguration of Conservation

Open Access•Jamie Scott Baxter, Séverine Marguin•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2024•Citada por: 1

Botanical garden museums are undergoing profound transformations. At the beginning of the 21st century refiguring processes, including climate change, the imperative of decolonisation, and advances in digital technology have led to a shift in the positioning of botanical gardens from Humboldtian collectors of nature to protectors of biodiversity. In this paper, through the sociospatial investigation of Berlin's Botanical Garden and Museum, we ana…

  • Refiguring Museums. Investigating Tensions in Exhibition Spaces

Open Access•Sarah Etz, Séverine Marguin et al.•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2024

Understood as active in the mediation of knowledge and values, museum spaces have become a growing field of investigation in the course of the spatial turn within the museum studies. In this special issue, we focus on the transformation of museum space. To this end, we introduce a specific theoretical framework, the refiguration of spaces, which aims to think spatial transformation in a non-linear, multiscalar and multiple way: The basic assumpti…

  • Visiting the Modern Wunderkammer

Open Access•Sarah Etz, Séverine Marguin et al.•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2024

Based on the assumption that museums have been spatially transformed in recent decades in the course of globalization, decolonization, and mediatization, we investigate from a socio-spatial perspective what influence this has on visitor experience and whether it leads to inequalities in ways of knowing. To this end, we conducted a visitor study in a science exhibition in a newly opened museum complex in Berlin, by using a mixed methods approach c…

  • For Hybrid Mapping

Open Access•Jamie-Scott Baxter, Séverine Marguin et al.•ARTICLE•Architecture and Culture•2023

This paper makes the case for a novel approach to mapping in the field of socio-spatial research. We argue for the necessity of a new research method engaging interdisciplinary knowledge from across the social sciences and spatial design disciplines to grasp the hybrid, processual and relational character of spaces under change. Here, transformation is understood through the conceptual framework of the “re-figuration of spaces” which provides the…

  • Public Spaces as Homophilic Spaces

    Open Access•Séverine Marguin, Vivien Sommer•ARTICLE•Quaderni di Sociologia•2023

Our research project on homophilic spaces in Berlin’s club culture is based on the cooperation with the French artist Julie Chovin. Through her work of more than 220 photos of club entrances in Berlin we were able to grasp the qualities of the Berlin clubs. We made the observations of a heterogeneous landscape yet hosting respectively homogeneous audiences. In order to understand the constitution of such homophilic communities, we focussed our so…

    Open Access•Séverine Marguin•ARTICLE•SociologieS•2013•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 21
