  • A Multi‐Level Migration System Between Regions of Origin and the European Hexagon of Attraction

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•International Migration•2025•Referencias: 6

International migration systems are, usually, addressed from the perspective of networks between migration flows that have countries of origin and destination as units of analysis. This paper proposes a complementary approach in which the units restricting migration networks are national sub‐regions at origin and countries at destination. What gives specificity to such migration systems based on a kind of conditional selectivity of emigration? Ho…

  • What is the Poverty Development Impact of Emigration on the Localities of Origin in an Eastern European Society

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•Migration and Development•2024

In the literature on emigration, the challenges of integration at the destination are largely discussed. How do those who become immigrants change or not and what is the impact of their inclusion in the arrival communities? It is less discussed what happens in the communities of emigration, in the country of origin. For the communities from which emigrants have gone abroad, research has been done especially on the causes of emigration. The conseq…

  • Understanding Left-Behind Places in a Contrastive Approach

    Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2024•Referencias: 4

How are left-behind places in a country compared to other types of places in an Eastern European country? A typology of local human development is designed and tested for the case of the Romanian society. The United Nations model of human development (structured by the three dimensions of education, economic development and health) is adapted to the local level and two contrasting measures are designed – an index and a typology of local human dev…

  • Motivation in the dynamics of European youth migration

    Open Access•Paula A Tufiş, Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•European Societies•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 13

In this article, we explore the complexities of the relationships between motivations in the migration process of young Europeans who have returned to their country of origin. We analyze a unique database of over 3,000 returnees, a sub-sample from a larger survey of about 30,000 young people in nine European countries. The findings suggest that there is a link between the motivations for the first migration and those for future migration among th…

  • Contextualising planned behaviours to the vaccination against Covid-19 in the European Union

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2023•Referencias: 16

The article targets the reasons that are behind behaviour orientation in the vaccination process against COVID-19. The data we are using come from the Flash Eurobarometer 494, collected in May 2021. The key dependent variable puts together vaccination intentions (soon, later on in 2021, undecided, later, never) and the fact of being vaccinated or not. A multivariate and multilevel analysis confirms the validity of an extended theory of planned be…

  • Valori centrale în comunități de practică a cercetării științifice la H. H. Stahl

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•Transilvania•2022

This short presentation is about the communities of research practice facilitated by Professor Henri H. Stahl (HHS). Own experience of being a student, doctoral student, and young researcher under the mentorship of HHS served as a ground for reconstructing the style of HHS as a facilitator of communities of research practice. The space of Stahl’s communities of research practice was structured in a three-dimensional way. He acted to form his stud…

  • The nexus of motivation–experience in the migration process of young Romanians

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu, G Tóth et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2017•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 7

This paper presents and explains the migration motivations and behaviour of young (age 16–35 years) Romanians. The originality of the paper lies in conceptualising the experiences and motivations of migration as a variable nexus during the migration process; that is, as a complex web of relations between motivations and types of migration experiences. A descriptive analysis introduces types of motivations for the first migration and for returning…

  • Before Crisis

    Open Access•Cristina Bradatan, Cristina E Bradatan et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2012•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 10

In this study, we compare labor force outcomes of the two largest immigrant communities in Spain (Moroccans and Romanians) before the economic crisis hit. We are interested in understanding if and how gender influences the labor force outcomes (wage per hour, labor force participation, and unemployment rate) of these two immigrant groups. Our analyses show that, overall, gender is an important variable on Spanish labor market, but it affects diff…

  • Dynamics of Romanian Emigration After 1989

    Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2005•Citada por: 7

In this article we examine the dynamics of temporary emigration in post-1989 Romania, and rely on a twofold approach to understanding this phenomenon. First, we adopt a macro-level perspective to examine temporary migration abroad with respect to the Romanian migration system. Its basic constitutive streams are those formed by permanent emigration, temporary emigration, and the migratory movement of the population between different types of resid…

  • Emerging Transnational Migration from Romanian Villages

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2005•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 7

This article presents the first results of a community census (December 2001) on temporary external migration at the level of all Romanian villages. Local key informants filled in the questionnaire on international temporary migration and its socio-demographic profile. As function of the key destinations, the Romanian villages cluster into six major migration fields: Germany, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Yugoslavia and Spain. At a more detailed level,…

  • Status Inconsistency as Predictor of Public Action Attitudes in Romania

    Open Access•Dumitru Sandu•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The article addresses the problem of status inconsistency as a predictor of public action attitudes. Its first basic hypothesis is that democratic, authoritarian, participatory and rebellion attitudes towards the way in which public problems are solved can be identified as relevant social types in a transition society. Specific social segments are structured around these attitudes. The second hypothesis implies that status inconsistencies, at hou…
