Computed Tomography, an aid to study techniques of artisanal processing of bronze ornamental elements dating back to the Iron Age
X-ray imaging constitutes a fundamental non-invasive approach for investigating the internal, otherwise inaccessible features of artworks and archaeological objects. Conventional radiography often provides sufficient information to identify material distributions, manufacturing techniques, and indicators of conservation state. While particularly effective for paintings and other planar artefacts, radiography may prove insufficient for complex obj…
X-CT Reconstruction as a Tool for Monitoring the Conservation State and Decay Processes of Works of Art and in Support of Restoration and Conservation Strategies
X-ray Computed Tomography (X-CT) is now an established technique for the investigation and diagnostics of Cultural Heritage. Its advantages include non-invasiveness, non-destructiveness, and the possibility of exploring the inner parts of an object without any modification. X-CT is often employed to investigate the construction methods of complex artifacts made with different parts or materials, but it is also able to support the analysis, interv…
On the use of neutron tomography for morphological analysis of highly corroded Kofun-period iron weapon fragments supported by quantitative neutron diffraction analysis and X-ray-based techniques
Provenance attribution of lapis lazuli rocks processed at the Bronze age archaeological site of Shahr-i Sokhta (Iran)
Replicative experimental use of Palaeolithic Ground Stone Tools
Advancements in microscopy technology have supported the traceological community in the pursuit of developing a quantitative approach in the field of use-wear analysis. The application of profilometry as a typical tribological tool, by providing micro-topographical scanning of artefact surfaces, has significantly expanded our capabilities, allowing us to (i) capture highly detailed micro-to-submicron-scale surface texture features, and (ii) attem…
First provenance evidence for lapis lazuli artefacts from Arabia
It is not crystal clear
The Iron Age was a period of change, with many innovations in the glass-making technology. The chemical composition of the set of objects considered in the present study demonstrates the diversity of the raw materials used and the depth of knowledge about the manipulation of glass appearance in the eighth-sixth centuries BCE. The study was carried out using fibre optics reflection spectroscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry at the m…
D Multispectral Imaging for Cultural Heritage Preservation
Digitalization techniques, such as photogrammetry (PG), are attracting the interest of experts in the cultural heritage field, as they enable the creation of three-dimensional virtual replicas of historical artifacts with 2D digital images. Indeed, PG allows for acquiring data regarding the overall appearance of an artifact, its geometry, and its texture. Furthermore, among several image-based techniques exploited for the conservation of works of…
The Non-Invasive Characterization of Iron Age Glass Finds from the “Gaetano Chierici” Collection in Reggio Emilia (Italy)
This work reports the results of the analyses performed on a set of glass finds from the “Gaetano Chierici” collection in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia. Forty-eight typologically heterogeneous glass finds were included in the list of the analyzed objects, dating from the fifth century BCE to the first century CE. The objects primarily consisted of glass beads; however, bangles, pinheads, and one vessel fragment were also included in the set.…
Tracing Old Gestures
This article presents an analytical procedure developed to replicate, document, and analyse the formation and evolution of use-wear traces on task-specific ground stone tools. The purpose of this study is to build a reference collection for wear patterns that occurred during the processing of vegetal resources, specifically those compatible with the MIS 3 period. To create the collection, riverine slabs and pebbles were utilised and various aspec…
Ring-eye blue beads in Iron Age central Italy – Preliminary discussion of technology and possible trade connections
Comparison of two ancient Egyptian Middle Kingdom statuettes from the Museo Egizio of Torino through computed tomographic measurements
"Some insight into "bronze quadrigati
One of the more obscure areas of Roman Republican early coinage are debased quadrigati, which traditionally are deemed to represent the last stage of this coin type. Starting from a pre-screening, based on low specific gravity samples, we first performed neutron diffraction analyses on a larger sample, which allowed us to single out the more debased series. Subsequently, we focused on those series and applied various additional physical investiga…
Average and core silver content of ancient-debased coins via neutron diffraction and specific gravity
Potentialities of X-ray fluorescence analysis in numismatics
Protocol for lapis lazuli provenance determination
Combined archaeomagnetic and thermoluminescence study of a brick kiln excavated at Fontanetto Po (Vercelli, Northern Italy)
Ionoluminescence and Cathodoluminescence in Marbles of Historic and Architectural Interest
Ion beam induced luminescence (IBIL) was applied, along with cathodoluminescence (CL), on seven samples of marbles of historic and architectural interest. The CL colours, observed in a cold cathode device, have been related to the IBIL spectra. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the IBIL spectral features has made it possible to disclose the influence of the chemical composition and to emphasize the crystal‐chemical role of the Mn 2+ . Beyond the c…
