  • Highlighting models of Indigenous leadership and self-governance for Covid-19 vaccination programmes

Open Access•Katrina Clark, Kristy Crooks et al.•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2024•Referencias: 27

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted Indigenous populations worldwide placing much importance on rapid and equitable vaccination. Nevertheless, many Indigenous communities have reported high vaccine hesitancy and low COVID-19 vaccine uptake. This may be attributed to various factors, including a lack of support for Indigenous leadership efforts to protect their communities and the pervasive infodemic targeting First Nations Peopl…

  • Bird harvesting practices and knowledge, risk perceptions, and attitudes regarding avian influenza among Canadian First Nations subsistence hunters

Open Access•Nadia A Charania, Isaac Martins et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our study indicated a need for more education about avian influenza and precautionary behaviours that are culturally-appropriate. First Nations subsistence hunters should be considered an avian influenza risk group and have associated special considerations included in future influenza pandemic plans

    Open Access•Nadia A Charania, Leonard J S Tsuji et al.•ARTICLE•International Indigenous Policy…•2014

Influenza pandemics disproportionately impact remote and/or isolated Indigenous communities worldwide. The differential risk experienced by such communities warrants the recommendation of specific mitigation measures. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were conducted with adult key health care informants from three remote and isolated Canadian First Nations communities of sub-Arctic Ontario. Forty-eight mitigation measures (including the set…

  • Giving voice to food insecurity in a remote indigenous community in subarctic Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Kelly Skinner, Rhona M Hanning et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Findings point to the continued importance of traditional food acquisition and food sharing, as well as community solutions for food systems change. These data highlight that traditional and store-bought food are both part of the strategies and solutions participants suggested for coping with food insecurity. Public health policies to improve food security for FN populations are urgently needed

  • Intakes of milk and alternatives among on-reserve First Nations youth in northern and southern Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Michelle Gates, Rhona M Hanning et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective To assess the adequacy of milk and alternatives, Ca and vitamin D intakes in First Nations (FN) youth in Ontario, Canada. Intakes were compared with the general population and dietary standards. Variation in intakes by community (proxy for remoteness) and BMI was examined. Design Data were collected by 24 h recall between November 2003 and June 2010. Intakes were analysed descriptively. Variation in intakes, by community and BMI categor…

Northern First Nations in Canada have experienced environmental change throughout history, adapting to these changes based on personal experience interacting with their environment. Community members of Fort Albany First Nation of northern Ontario, Canada, have voiced their concern that their youths' connection to the land is diminishing, making this generation more vulnerable to environmental change. Community members previously identified the c…

  • A community-based participatory approach and engagement process creates culturally appropriate and community informed pandemic plans after the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic

Open Access•Nadia A Charania, Nadia Ali Muhammad Ali Charania et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Our results illustrate the importance of engaging the public, especially First Nations, in pandemic planning to address local perspectives. The community engagement process used was successful in incorporating community-based input to create up-to-date and culturally-appropriate community-level pandemic plans. Since these pandemic plans are dynamic in nature, we recommend that the plans are continuously updated to address the communities' evolvin…
