Green Energy Is Not Always Green
In an effort to reduce carbon emissions and move toward a sustainable economy, developing countries are adopting various mechanisms, including promoting renewable energy consumption. However, whether renewable energy consumption is truly green and how it impacts growth remains debatable. Using a sample of 98 developing countries from 2002 to 2021, this paper explores the impact of renewable energy on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions and economic …
How Does Financial Flexibility Strategy Impact on Risk Management Effectiveness
In the context of emerging countries trying to attract foreign investors, building governance strategies and risk management of firms is an increasing concern. This study investigates the impact of financial flexibility strategies on the risk management effectiveness of firms and mechanism of these impacts by focusing on Vietnamese listed firms by applying the fixed effect and system GMM methods on a sample of 635 Vietnamese listed firms during t…
Determinants of FDI attractiveness
The article examines the impact of tax burden, institutional quality, and some macroeconomic determinants on attracting inflows of FDI in ASEAN-7. We estimate the panel data sample with pooling, a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR), and fixed-effects models. The empirical results indicate that economic growth, tax burden, quality of economic institution, and inflation are key drivers that significantly attract FDI while population growth and qu…
Do Natural Disasters Open a Window of Opportunity for Corruption
This study explores the link between natural disasters and corruption at the local government level. We examine whether a natural disaster affects official households more favourably than non-official households. We find that natural disasters decrease nonofficial household expenditures significantly, however, they have negligible effect on official household expenditures. Meanwhile, both kinds of households experience similar reduction in income…
Linking loss aversion and present bias with overspending behavior of tourists
Building upon Prospect Theory and Hyperbolic Time Discounting models, we explore how behavioral factors influence the probability of overspending among outbound leisure travelers. We construct our data in two steps. First, we collect demographics and travel-related variables from a random sample of 314 Singaporean tourists across different age groups and income levels. Second, we conduct a field experiment to measure their risk and time preferenc…
Trust under the Prospect Theory and Quasi-Hyperbolic Preferences
We conduct a field experiment in Vietnamese villages to explore the effect of the prospect theory and of quasi-hyperbolic time preferences parameters on trust and trustworthiness. We find that risk aversion, loss aversion, and present bias do not influence trustors’ decisions, but higher time discounting increases the amount sent to trustees in the south of Vietnam and probability weighting decreases it in the north. If time discounting and loss …
Risk and Time Preferences
We conducted experiments in Vietnamese villages to determine the predictors of risk and time preferences. In villages with higher mean income, people are less loss-averse and more patient. Household income is correlated with patience but not with risk. We expand measurements of risk and time preferences beyond expected utility and exponential discounting, replacing those models with prospect theory and a three-parameter hyperbolic discounting mod…
