  • Stepping into the future of behavioral health

    Ronald W Manderscheid, Amy A Ward•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2024

To improve our practices of today and to overcome the problems that confront us at present, the behavioral health field must anticipate what the future is likely to bring. Such foresight is particularly important right now because of the changes and disruptions that have occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past 3 years. We begin by recounting major developments in the mental health field since the founding of the National Institute of …

    Ronald W Manderscheid, Donald S Rae et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1982•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 7

The development of a working consensus through negotiation between social actors in a situation of ambiguous normative expectations has been described as a cybernetic process. The present paper reports a study of the dynamics specific to one kind of negotiation, that of defining relational control. The data fit a model of a third-order Markov process, implying that the control direction of a given speech depends on the three speeches before it. A…

  • Personal vs Relationship Orientation as a Dimension of Sex-Role Differentiation

    Open Access•Elizabeth S Thune, Ronald W Manderscheid et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

Previous theory and research suggest that orientation toward self vs others is one aspect of sex-role differentiation: males tend to focus on personal issues; females, upon relationship issues. An important question is whether such differentials are due to long-term socialization or to situation-based factors, such as status and power. The present research is designed to examine this topic within the context of group therapy. Two groups, with var…

  • Psychosocial Factors for Classroom, Group, and Ward

    Open Access•Ronald W Manderscheid, Gail R Koenig et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1978

Moos (1974) postulates the existence and intermilieu equivalence of three, relatively uncorrelated, underlying domains of the psychosocial environment: relationship, system maintenance, and personal development. A partial, indirect test of these assertions can be obtained by evaluating and comparing the factor structures of the Class Atmosphere Scale for classrooms, the Group Atmosphere Scale for therapy groups, and the Ward Atmosphere Scale for …

The quality and focus of interpersonal interactions are signifi-cant indicators of efficacy within small therapy groups. Not only are members ’ relationships with the therapist important, but the interactions among members can facilitate personal development. Classification and measurement of these behav-iors permit evaluation and improvement of intervention models. In order to better assess two group models being developed in the Mental Health S…

Data are reported from a pilot study designed to compare a Free Association Test for married couples with the standard individual form. Results from one group of five couples indicate that presence of marital partner is likely to alter the pattern and increase the levels of anxiety and hostility expressed by a person, even though congruence between spouses is not enhanced. Couples' scores may provide the basis for profiles of different types of m…

  • Changes in Serum Dopamine-β-Hydroxylase Activity during Group Psychotherapy

Sam Silbergeld, Laurie Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1975

This psychobiological study investigates married-coupled group psychotherapy from pre- and postsession serum dopamine dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) determinations, the Free Association Test (FAT), and a Postsession Questionnaire (PSQ). Experimental manipulations permit controls for the assessment of DBH variations. Group, gender, and individual linear regression analyses are interpreted by a stressor-destrssor typology. DBH levels significantly…

This study reports component and summary levels of free association anxiety and hostility in junior high school adolescents. Counselor ( n = 24) and Noncounselor ( n = 19) groups derive from four, brief interpersonal coping classes held at a recently integrated school. These groups consist, respectively, of those referred and those not referred by school guidance personnel. Both groups exhibit higher mean anxiety and hostility levels than do prev…

Scores were factor analyzed, and the results compared with the factor structures reported in two earlier studies of students and school administrators. Factors I (Conformity-Neurotic Anxiety) and II (Extraversion) are invariant in all three analyses. Factors III (Capacity for Achievement) and IV (Superego Strength) differ across populat…
