Congruence and discrepancies in mothers’ and adolescents’ reports of the extent of sexual communication
Researchers have found that, on average, parents report more frequent parent-adolescent sexual communication than do their adolescents, but they have not considered that this informant discrepancy in perceptions likely does not occur in all families. We examined the proportion of mother-adolescent dyads who showed three patterns of congruence and discrepancy in the extent of sexual communication: Mother > Adolescent, Mother = Adolescent, and Adol…
How Do Mothers Prepare for Sexual Health Discussions with their Young Adolescents
Many mothers do not communicate with their adolescent about sexual health topics due to perceived barriers. Our goal in this study was to shed light on the activities mothers engage in to prepare for sexual health discussions with their young adolescents. We also examined the extent to which mothers’ past sexual communication behaviour and intentions were associated with engaging in these activities and perceptions of their helpfulness. Participa…
Adolescents' Individual Characteristics and Intentions to Seek Help from Types of Peers and Parents
Adolescents' relationships with friends and with parents provide them with access to potential sources of assistance when they are experiencing problems. However, we lack more nuanced information about the types of peers and parents they intend to approach and about the contributions their individual characteristics make to their plans. This study examined adolescents' intentions to seek help for a personal/emotional problem from five types of pe…
Parent-Adolescent Sexual Communication in India
Parents are an important source of sexual health information for adolescents, and quality parent–adolescent sexual communication has been linked to positive sexual health outcomes. We sought to enhance the limited information about parent–adolescent sexual communication in India. The participants were 78 mothers and 91 fathers of adolescents ages 12–19 years. Both mothers and fathers reported limited past sexual communication, on average having t…
Young adolescents’ responsiveness to sexual communication with their mother
INTRODUCTION: It is unlikely that parents can have effective sexuality discussions with their adolescent if the adolescent is not responsive to their efforts. We evaluated young adolescents' intentions of being responsive to sexual communication with their mother and whether youths who were likely, ambivalent, or unlikely to be responsive differed on their characteristics, features of previous sexual communication, and features of the mother-adol…

Predicting Mother-Adolescent Sexual Communication Using the Integrative Model of Behavioral Prediction
Guided by the integrative model of behavioral prediction, we examined factors associated with more extensive mother-adolescent sexual communication. Participants were 303 mothers of young adolescents who completed a survey assessing their skills, attitudes about the outcomes of sexual health discussions, perceptions of social norms, self-efficacy, and sexual communication intentions at baseline (Time 1) and the extent of their sexual communicatio…
Seeking help from a female friend
Adolescent girls frequently manage problems by seeking help from friends. We examined girls' intentions of seeking help from a female friend and whether these intentions were related to their competencies (emotional competence, self‐disclosure) directly and/or indirectly via specific friendship features (companionship, closeness). Participants included 222 Canadian girls (Grades 9–12) who completed an anonymous survey at school. Results showed th…
Factors associated with middle school students' perceptions of the quality of school-based sexual health education
This paper examines factors associated with middle school students' perceptions of the quality of the sexual health education (SHE) they received at school. Participants were 478 predominately White young people (256 girls, 222 boys) in grades 6–8 who completed a survey assessing their demographic characteristics; dating and sexual experience; and perceptions of the content, delivery and quality of the SHE they had received. Boys and students in …
Factors affecting Canadian teachers' willingness to teach sexual health education
Non-specialist teachers in Canada are increasingly required to teach sexual health topics. However, research suggests that they do not always do so willingly. This study examined the associations between the characteristics of non-specialist elementary and middle school teachers (n = 294) in Canadian schools and their willingness to provide sexual health education (SHE) and their perceptions of factors affecting their willingness to provide SHE. …
Parents' Reports of Sexual Communication With Children in Kindergarten to Grade 8
We examined factors associated with parents' reports of three aspects of parent-child sexual communication, quality, frequency with which parents encouraged questions, and extent of communication, on each of 10 sexual health topics. Participants were 3,413 mothers and 426 fathers with children in kindergarten to grade 8. Parents' demographic characteristics, own sexual health education, knowledge and comfort talking about sexuality with their chi…
The co‐occurrence of adolescent boys’ and girls’ use of psychologically, physically, and sexually abusive behaviours in their dating relationships
We examined the co‐occurrence of and risk factors for adolescent boys’ and girls’ self‐reported use of psychologically, physically, and sexually abusive behaviours in their dating relationships. The participants were 324 boys and 309 girls in grades 7, 9, or 11 who completed surveys at school. Descriptive analyses showed that 19% of boys and 26% of girls reported having used two or more forms of dating violence. One third of students in grade 7 h…
Adolescents' Subjective Age
Two studies investigated the relation between adolescents' subjective age and their self-reported problem behavior, autonomy, and peer relationships. In Study 1, an older subjective age among 15-year-old girls and boys was correlated significantly and positively with several problem behaviors (e.g., substance use), behavioral autonomy, and aspects of peer relationships such as association with deviant peers and involvement with other-sex peers. I…
Adolescents' Perceptions of Parents' Work and Adolescents' Work Values in Two-Earner Families
Examined in this study were relations among adolescents `perceptions of parents' work conditions (e.g., work overload) and work-related affect (e.g., job satisfaction), adolescents' respect for parents' work, and adolescents' work values. Participants were 81 young adolescents and their mothers and fathers in two-earner families, all of whom took part in a longitudinal study in which questionnaire data were collected. Results were that on several…
Parents' Work Overload and Problem Behavior in Young Adolescents
This investigation examined a three-stage spillover process in which parents' stress and parent-adolescent relations mediated a link between parents' work overload and adolescent problem behavior. Adolescents in dual-earner families reported on parent-adolescent relations and their own problem behavior. Their parents provided reports of work overload, levels of stress, and parent-adolescent relations. Regression analyses revealed some support for…
