  • The trade‐GDP ratio as a measure of openness

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney, Mo Tian•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

The ratio of trade to GDP is often used as a summary measure of a country's openness to the rest of the world. It is well‐known that the trade–GDP ratio is affected by relatively time‐invariant factors, such as country size and remoteness from trading partners, that can largely be controlled for in cross‐country panels by using country fixed effects. It is shown here that there are also other important, time‐varying influences on the trade‐GDP ra…

  • Bond Spreads and Economic Activity in Eight European Economies

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney, Paul Mizen et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 43

We provide new insights into the relationship between financial market tightness and real activity, using a new database of corporate bonds issued in eight European countries. Bond spreads have a significant negative relationship with four real activity variables at horizons 1–8 quarters ahead. The relationship is robust to adding measures of monetary policy tightness and leading indicators, providing strong support for models previously only eva…

  • Natural Resource Exports, Fiscal Policy Volatility and Growth

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney, Håvard Halland•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2014•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 8

The combination of poor institutions and erratic macroeconomic policy, as measured by the volatility of fiscal policy, is associated with slower growth. We show that macroeconomic policy is more erratic in countries that are rich in natural resources, especially minerals and fuels, and in those that receive large aid inflows. Poor institutions also play a role. Although Africa is a major receiver of aid and exporter of natural resources, this is …

  • How different are the correlates of onset and continuation of civil wars

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney, Arcangelo Dimico•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2011•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 18

It is very common to analyse the factors associated with the onset and continuation of civil wars entirely separately, as if there were likely to be no similarity between them. This is an overstatement of the theoretical position, which has established only that they may be different (i.e. less than perfectly correlated). The hypothesis that the explanatory variables are the same is not theoretically excludable and is empirically testable, both f…

  • The Regional Impact of Trade Liberalization in a Model with Congestion Costs à la Helpman

Pedro Esteban Moncarz, Michael Bleaney•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2010

Moncarz P. E. and Bleaney M. The regional impact of trade liberalization in a model with congestion costs à la Helpman, Regional Studies. The effects of the liberalization of international trade are analysed in a New Economic Geography model of a country with an asymmetrical distribution of housing between regions. Labour is mobile between regions, but not between countries. Trade liberalization tends to reduce inequalities in the distribution of…

  • Credibility and Disinflation in the European Monetary System

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney, Paul Mizen•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1997•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

Analysis of interest differentials in the European Monetary System has suggested a widespread lack of credibility of the Exchange Rate Mechanism in the sense that in most countries the implicit expected rate of devaluation was significant and not far short of inflation differentials vis‐à‐vis the deutschmark. We present and test a model in which prices reflect expectations of exchange rate behaviour. The results provide mixed evidence that price‐…

  • Tax revenue instability, with particular reference to sub‐Saharan Africa

Michael Bleaney, Norman Gemmell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1995

This article examines the temporal instability of tax revenues across a sample of developed and less developed countries. It is shown that instability is especially high in LDCs and is highest in open economies with low per capita income, high output variance and inflationary problems. Even allowing for these factors, revenue instability appears to be particularly high in sub‐Saharan Africa. Revenue instability can be expected, via the government…

  • Investment, trade liberalisation and structural adjustment

Michael Bleaney, D Fielding•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1995

The disappointing investment response in developing countries to World Bank Structural Adjustment Lending (SALs) is considered in the light of a theoretical model of the impact of trade liberalisation and tightening balance‐of‐payments constraints on investment. The policy reforms under SALs are not as conducive to increased investment as they may appear to be at first sight. The tendency of countries to apply for SALs when confronted with seriou…

    Open Access•Michael Bleaney•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1987•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

On the evidence of trade-cycle theory, pre-Keynesian macroeconomics recog nized that unemployment in depressions was involuntary in the sense o f not being caused by excessive real wages. But pre-Keynesian theory was ignorant of the notion of an effective demand constraint and advo cated measures to stimulate demand on the basis of their impact on ou tput decisions at the individual-firm level rather than on the level of aggregate demand. • The present crisis in historical perspective

    Michael Bleaney•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•1985•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

The present crisis of capitalism differs from that of the 1930s in major ways. Investment has not collapsed, macroeconomic policy has moved away from instead of towards Keynesian ideas, and economic class conflict has played an important role. The rise of class conflict is attributed to structural, political and ideological changes in the advanced capitalist countries, and macroeconomic policy developments are interpreted as a response to the res…
