Aspirations in a warming world
Perceived changes in daily life complement perceived environmental change in shaping adaptation to environmental change
Structured timeline mapping as a data collection methodology
The process of adaptation is dynamic and involves a temporal component. However, conventional methods of data collection have mostly been used in research on environmental adaptations and provide a rather static view. The structured timeline mapping method presented here is grounded in social sciences, designed for the West African environment, and constructed to capture time. The different steps for its construction and implementation are outlin…
Habitability for a connected, unequal and changing world
The concept of habitability is gaining momentum in climate and environmental studies. • Present conceptualizations lack socio-cultural integration and local context. • Need for intersectionally and locally differentiated assessments of habitability. • Full understanding of habitability need to consider connectivity and tele-coupling. • Research should integrate diverse methodologies and local perspectives. As global climate change intensifies, th…
Impacts of rainfall shocks on out-migration are moderated more by per capita income than by agricultural output in Türkiye
Rural populations are particularly exposed to increasing weather variability, notably through agriculture. In this paper, we exploit longitudinal data for Turkish provinces from 2008 to 2018 together with precipitation records over more than 30 years to quantify how variability in a standardized precipitation index (SPI) affects out-migration as an adaptation mechanism. Doing so, we document the role of three potential causal channels: per capita…
African students’ emigration intentions
This paper addresses the drivers of migration intentions amongst francophone West African university students. We use an original dataset collected from more than 4000 students in Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, and Senegal. Multivariate methods allow us to link the intention to migrate with the characteristics of students, with their opinion regarding mobility as well as with the perceived situation of their country of origin. We analyze intervening facto…
Linking climate change, environmental degradation, and migration
In WIREs Climate Change , Issue 1(4), 2010, I suggested a typology of the data and methods used to assess links between climate change, environmental degradation and migration (Piguet, 2010). My review of the literature included publications up to 2009. Since then, the number of empirically based scientific publications on this topic has risen substantially to average 40 articles per year and the scope of methods, stock of results and diversity o…
The ‘refugee crisis’ in Europe
This article analyses the recent growth in asylum applications both in and at the borders of Europe. It enriches the scholarship on the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ with an emphasis on structural transformations and geographical processes. While an increase in regional violence near Europe in 2015 played a key role in triggering displacements, we suggest three longer-term factors that may have facilitated access to European borders but led to urgen…

How to explain migration policy openness in times of closure? The case of international students in Switzerland
Since the 1990s, Swiss immigration policies have placed increasing\n\nrestrictions on non-European Union (EU) immigrants. However, in 2011,\n\nbased on the initiative of Jacques Neirynck, the Swiss Parliament\n\napproved a law facilitating the admission and integration of non-EU\n\nnationals with a Swiss university degree. How can this policy openness\n\nin times of closure be explained? Drawing on the narratives of\n\nstakeholders during parliam…
The uneven geography of research on “environmental migration”

From "Primitive Migration" to "Climate Refugees
Beginning with Friedrich Ratzel, the founders of migration studies all mentioned the natural environment as an important determinant of human mobility. As migration theories grew in coherence and complexity over the course of the twentieth century, however, environmental considerations generally disappeared from explanations of displacement. They would reappear in a largely unconnected discourse stressing the threat of future waves of "environmen…
Migration and Climate Change
Linking climate change, environmental degradation, and migration
Empirical research focusing on the links between climate change, environmental degradation, and forced migration has risen significantly in recent years and uses an impressive variety of methods. The present article suggests a typology identifying six research method families: ecological inference based on area characteristics, individual sample surveys, time series, multilevel analysis, agent‐based modeling (ABM), and qualitative/ethnographic st…
From urban wastelands to new‐build gentrification
Gentrification represents an important aspect of the transformation of socio‐demographic structures in many cities around the world. The definition of this concept has been extended in recent years to cover different processes of social upgrading and to incorporate a plurality of forms, protagonists, and spaces. The notion of ‘new‐build gentrification’ is part of this process of redefinition. Because of its strong connections with global socioeco…
New forms of gentrification
This special issue addresses the questions of gentrification and new‐build gentrification, two processes of urban transformation that significantly contribute to the reconfiguration of the socio‐demographic profile of populations in contemporary cities. Whereas gentrification has long referred to the physical and social transformation of central areas through rehabilitation of existing housing stock and population displacement by more affluent ho…
