Perceived Unfairness in University Settings
In universities, perceived unfairness is associated with negative outcomes, such as dissatisfaction, lower engagement, higher drop-out and stress, and poorer mental health. It is, however, still unclear which aspects constitute perceived unfairness in students. Therefore, this qualitative study explored students’ perceptions of unfairness with twenty semi-structured interviews. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed fo…
Health literacy and mental health of school principals. Results from a German cross-sectional survey
Purpose School principals are generally seen as key facilitators for the delivery and long-term implementation of activities on school health promotion, including health literacy. However, there is little evidence on the health literacy and health status of this occupational group. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the health literacy of school principals and its association with mental health indicators. Design/methodology/approach A c…
Infodemic Preparedness and Covid-19
Searching for PHSM was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of achieving sufficient DHL subscales in a shorter time. Further studies are needed, including developing strategies to increase the availability of high-quality information concerning public health and social measures and to improve (digital) health literacy
Digital Health Literacy and Web-Based Information-Seeking Behaviors of University Students in Germany During the Covid-19 Pandemic
BACKGROUND: Digital communication technologies are playing an important role in the health communication strategies of governments and public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The internet and social media have become important sources of health-related information on COVID-19 and on protective behaviors. In addition, the COVID-19 infodemic is spreading faster than the coronavirus itself, which interferes with governmental health-r…
Critical Events throughout the Educational Career
More than 20% of all school-aged children in Germany experience a grade retention and repetition during the educational career which is likely to affect their well-being as a central element of school success. This study aims at revealing the temporal dynamics of general and school well-being around the event of grade retention (i.e., the year when the decision to repeat a grade is taken) and the subsequent grade repetition (i.e., the repeated sc…
The Role of School Leaders’ Health Literacy for the Implementation of Health Promoting Schools
The promotion of health literacy especially for male leaders would not only result in positive effects on an individual level but also could contribute to a stronger implementation of activities on school health promotion. We suggest integrating health literacy, HPS attitudes, and competencies more strongly into the qualification and in further training of school leaders
Organizational Health Literacy in Facilities for People with Disabilities
To date, studies on individual and organizational health literacy (OHL) in facilities for people with disabilities are scarce. Thus, the aims of this study are (1) to adapt an existing instrument for measuring organizational health literacy (OHL), namely, the "Health literate health care organization scale" (HLHO-10), to the context of facilities for people with disabilities, (2) to quantitatively examine characteristics of OHL, and (3) to qualit…
The role of class-level composition and schools ́ contextual characteristics for school-aged children ́s life satisfaction
Aim of this study is to examine the role of individual, class-level composition and school-level contextual features on school-aged children ́s life satisfaction. Methods: Data from students in ninth grade (n = 10,715), in 745 classes within 406 secondary schools of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) were used. Bivariate and three-level logistic multilevel analyses were conducted including individual-level, class-level composition…
Inequalities in adolescent self-rated health and smoking in Europe
BACKGROUND: Although there is evidence for socioeconomic inequalities in health and health behaviour in adolescents, different indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) have rarely been compared within one data sample. We examined associations of five SES indicators with self-rated health (SRH) and smoking (ie, a leading cause of health inequalities) in Europe. METHODS: Data of adolescents aged 14-17 years old were obtained from the 2013 SILNE sur…
Class-Level School Performance and Life Satisfaction
This study investigates whether class-level school performance affects students' life satisfaction and if there are differential effects for high- and low-performing students. Data were derived from the National Educational Panel Study, including n = 5196 students (49.6% girls), nested in 478 classes and 250 secondary schools. School performance in class was measured by aggregating individual grade point average in Mathematics and German. The stu…
Is being a “small fish in a big pond” bad for students ́ psychosomatic health? A multilevel study on the role of class-level school performance
This study revealed that class composition in terms of PSP was differentially associated with students ́ psychosomatic complaints, depending on their individual PSP. Findings highlight the vulnerability of students with poor PSP placed in classes with a higher percentage of students with good PSP. Results of this study therefore indicate a need for initiatives for low performing students from teachers and school staff in class
Academic performance and adolescent smoking in 6 European cities
Poor academic performance is a known risk factor for adolescent smoking, yet the association remains unclear, as the role of social ties has been rarely examined. Our study aims to investigate the role of friendship ties in this association. In a sample of 11,015 adolescents, aged 14 to17, in 50 schools within six European cities (SILNE-survey, 2013), we used multilevel models to analyse the mediating effect of the composition of friendship ties …
Adolescents’ psychological health during the economic recession
The results partially support our hypothesis and highlight that policy initiatives in terms of an increase in family benefits might partially benefit adolescent health, but tend to widen social inequalities in adolescent health during the recent recession
Is educational differentiation associated with smoking and smoking inequalities in adolescence? A multilevel analysis across 27 European and North American countries
This study aims to determine whether educational differentiation (i.e. early and long tracking to different school types) relate to socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent smoking. Data were collected from the WHO ‐Collaborative ‘Health Behaviour in School‐aged Children ( HBSC )’ study 2005/2006, which included 48,025 15‐year‐old students (N boys = 23,008, N girls = 25,017) from 27 European and North American countries. Socioeconomic position wa…

Psychosocial and behavioural factors in the explanation of socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health
BACKGROUND: The relative contribution of different pathways leading to health inequalities in adolescence was rarely investigated, especially in a cross-national perspective. The aim of the study is to analyse the contribution of psychosocial and behavioural factors in the explanation of inequalities in adolescent self-rated health (SRH) by family wealth in 28 countries. METHODS: This study was based on the international WHO 'Health Behaviour in …
Individual and local level factors and antenatal care use in Colombia
This paper examined the association between individual and local level factors and the number of antenatal care visits completed by women in Colombia using data from the 2010 Colombian Demographic and Health Survey and multilevel logistic regression models. Our findings suggest that, in addition to maternal socioeconomic status, contextual factors influence whether pregnant women complete the minimum recommended number of antenatal care visits. T…
O4-1.5 Macro-level determinants of health among adolescents in welfare states
Introduction Previous studies have shown that macro-level factors, such as income inequality, wealth of countries or welfare state characteristics are crucial determinants of health and health inequalities among adults. So far, comparative research has rarely focused on children and adolescents. This study is among the first to examine whether different macro-level determinants are associated with differences in subjective health and socio-econom…
