Cost-neutral food tax reforms for healthier and more sustainable diets
This study evaluates cost-neutral food tax reforms integrating climate and health objectives, compared with strictly climate- and health-focused reforms. Results indicate that a strict climate-focused reform risks negative health outcomes, while the strict health-focused reform achieves only 40 % of the climate benefit of the integrated reforms and adversely impacts animal welfare. Integrated tax reforms, however, could reduce Sweden's food carbo…
Public and political acceptability of a food tax shift – An experiment with policy framing and revenue use
Ensuring Food Security Through Meal Optimization
Food security is of vital importance for human existence. Yet, global food production has huge environmental impacts which increasingly threaten food security. Today, food production occupies around 40% of all ice-free land surface, contributes about 25x0025; of all human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, and is the largest driver of deforestation. Moreover, it accounts for about 70% of the Earth’s freshwater withdrawals and is driving nitrogen a…
Parents’ experiences of participating in the Healthy School Start Plus programme – a qualitative study
The Healthy School Start Plus trial was retrospectively registered in the International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number Registry on January 4, 2018 and available online at ClinicalTrials.gov: No. NCT03390725
Relationships between Physical Activity Parenting Practices and Children’s Activity Measured by Accelerometry with Children’s Activity Style as a Moderator—A Cross Sectional Study
The objective was to examine the associations between physical activity parenting practices (PAPP) and children's levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and time spent sedentary (SED) during non-school time in weekdays and weekends when children's activity style was taken into account. Study participants were 88 children (mean age 6.3 (SD 0.3) years); 51.0% girls) and their parents who took part in A Healthy School Start Plus in…
What works to improve school lunch nutritional quality – legislation or self-audit
Objective: Sweden updated its legislation on universal free school meals in 2011 and nutrition was explicitly mentioned. The current study (i) describes cross-sectional changes in school lunch nutritional quality during the following eight years and (ii) examines if repeated self-auditing, using a fully automated, online tool (School Food Sweden), based on the implementation strategy of audit and feedback, was associated with improvements. Design…
Potential health impact of increasing adoption of sustainable dietary practices in Sweden
If these practices were more widely adopted, they would be expected to lead to improvements in public health in Sweden. Over the long term, this would translate to many premature deaths postponed or prevented from a number of chronic diseases, to the benefit of individuals, society, the climate and the economy
IMplementation and evaluation of the school-based family support PRogram a Healthy School Start to promote child health and prevent OVErweight and obesity (IMPROVE) – study protocol for a cluster-rand…

School-related physical activity interventions and mental health among children
Promoting Evidence-Based Practice for Improved Occupational Safety and Health at Workplaces in Sweden. Report on a Practice-Based Research Network Approach
Despite the rapid growth in research and R&D expenditures, the translation of research into practice is limited. One approach to increase the translation and utilization of research is practice based research networks. With the aim of strengthening evidence-based practice (EBP) within occupational health services in Sweden (OH-Services), a practice-based research network (PBRN-OSH) was developed. The PBRN-OSH includes researchers and representati…
The importance of school lunches to the overall dietary intake of children in Sweden
Objective: School lunches have potential to foster healthy diets in all children, but data on their importance are relatively scarce. The current study aimed to describe the dietary intake from school lunches by sex and school grade, and to assess how the daily intake, school lunch intake and the daily intake provided by lunch differ by sex and parental education. Design: Cross-sectional. All foods and drinks consumed for 1–3 weekdays were self-r…
Managing Implementation of a Parental Support Programme for Obesity Prevention in the School Context
Health-related behaviours in children can be influenced by parental support programmes. The aim of this study was to explore barriers to and facilitators for the implementation of a parental support programme to promote physical activity and healthy dietary habits in a school context. We explored the views and experiences of 17 coordinating school nurses, non-coordinating school nurses, and school principals. We based the interview guide on the C…
Optimizing School Food Supply
There is great potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) from public-sector meals. This paper aimed to develop a strategy for reducing GHGE in the Swedish school food supply while ensuring nutritional adequacy, affordability, and cultural acceptability. Amounts, prices and GHGE-values for all foods and drinks supplied to three schools over one year were gathered. The amounts were optimized by linear programming. Four nutritionally ad…
Health and Work Environment among Female and Male Swedish Elementary School Teachers—A Cross-Sectional Study
The results of this study can help us to develop a more sustainable work environment for female and male teachers. A more sustainable work environment might attract more people to the profession and incentivize existing teachers to remain in the profession
Implementation of the Swedish Guideline for Prevention of Mental ill-health at the Workplace

Parental strategies for influencing the diet of their children – A qualitative study from disadvantaged areas
Factors influencing the implementation of a school-based parental support programme to promote health-related behaviours—interviews with teachers and parents
When implementing a parental support programme in a school setting it is important to facilitate communication and clearly define the division of responsibilities between project management, schools and parents. This emphasises the need for managerial support, and a professional prevention support system
One size does not fit all–qualitative process evaluation of the Healthy School Start parental support programme to prevent overweight and obesity among children in disadvantaged areas in Sweden
It seems important to tailor the intervention to the abilities of the target group in order to increase participant engagement. Including activities that focus on parents as role models and cooperation between parents seems important to bring about changes in the home environment. It also appears important to include activities that target cooperation between home and school
Stuck in a vicious circle of stress. Parental concerns and barriers to changing children's dietary and physical activity habits
Longitudinal changes in health behaviours and body weight among Swedish school children - associations with age, gender and parental education – the SCIP school cohort
This study adds to our knowledge regarding the temporal development of health behaviours and weight status in school children. Differences with regard to gender and socioeconomic status were seen already at a young age. These results contribute to our understanding of several important determinants of obesity and chronic diseases and may inform future interventions regarding how to decrease gender and social inequalities in health
Design, testing and validation of an innovative web-based instrument to evaluate school meal quality
Objective To develop a feasible, valid, reliable web-based instrument to objectively evaluate school meal quality in Swedish primary schools. Design The construct ‘school meal quality’ was operationalized by an expert panel into six domains, one of which was nutritional quality. An instrument was drafted and pilot-tested. Face validity was evaluated by the panel. Feasibility was established via a large national study. Food-based criteria to predi…

ISRCTN: ISRCTN32750699
Promoting a healthy diet and physical activity in adults with intellectual disabilities living in community residences
Many adults with intellectual disabilities have poor dietary habits, low physical activity and weight disturbances. This study protocol describes the design and evaluation of a health intervention aiming to improve diet and physical activity in this target group. In Sweden, adults with intellectual disabilities often live in community residences where the staff has insufficient education regarding the special health needs of residents. No publish…
Obesogenic environments – aspects on measurement and indicators
Background The focus in understanding the causes of and preventing obesity has broadened from the individual level to include the obesogenic environment. Proving a causal relationship between environmental factors and eating patterns poses a great challenge because randomised controlled trials are seldom possible or feasible to conduct. Interactions between the environment and individuals are beginning to be explored in multilevel studies and qua…
