Substance Use Monitoring Among People Who Use Drugs Using a Novel Assay to Test Dried Blood Spot Specimens
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The development of comprehensive strategies to understand emerging trends in substance use is necessary to design effective prevention and harm reduction strategies for people who use drugs (PWUD). Dried blood spots (DBS) can be used as a non-conventional drug testing approach that meets Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accuracy and precision guidelines. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: From July 2021 to July 2022, 1,559 …
Who defines desistance? Exploring the perspectives and experiences of female victim–survivors of intimate partner violence
A small body of research has started to explore the factors and processes that contribute to desistance from intimate partner violence (IPV). However, this evidence has been undertaken in the absence of consistent definitions of the construct that we are trying to measure and understand. We analysed the narratives of 15 female victim–survivors of IPV who reported a significant reduction or cessation of abuse for at least 6 months while still in t…
Unpacking Variation in Technology-Facilitated Intimate Partner Violence
Purpose Technology-facilitated intimate partner violence (TFIPV) is increasingly recognised as a significant form of abuse, often co-occurring with offline violence. However, existing research frequently treats TFIPV as a singular phenomenon, overlooking variation in its manifestation and impact. This study examines differences in victim-survivor characteristics and relationship contexts across TFIPV subtypes. Methods Using data from a nationally…
Money laundering and the harm from organised crime
We examined the effect of money laundering on the harm associated with organised crime by using linked data on organised crime groups known to law enforcement from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and suspicious transactions reported to the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre. Involvement in money laundering by an organised crime group, and an increase in the amount of money laundered, increased the probability of or…
Grievances and conspiracy theories as motivators of anti-authority protests
This study involved interviews with a sample of individuals who protested in opposition to public health measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. These interviews were analysed to explore the motivations for participating in protest activity. Protesters were motivated by strong personal grievances based on perceived negative experiences and deterioration of their or their family’s personal circumstances. For many respondents, these griev…
Co-offending networks among members of outlaw motorcycle gangs across types of crime
Outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCGs) have become synonymous with organised crime through engagement in criminal activities including illicit drug production and distribution, firearms trafficking, and serious violent crime. These crimes contribute significant social and economic harms in countries that feature a presence from these groups. The current paper uses network analytics to analyse the extent of co-offending within and across established club…
Investigating the Dynamics of Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Co-Offending Networks
Offense specialization among outlaw motorcycle gang members
Enablers of illicit drug trafficking by organised crime groups
In this study we explore the enablers of illicit drug trafficking using law enforcement intelligence data on a sample of 587 organised crime groups. We measure the prevalence of other forms of criminal activity and their relationship with poly-drug trafficking, which refers to the trafficking of multiple drug types and is associated with increased profitability, versatility and resilience to disruption. Other forms of criminal activity— including…
Crime by outlaw motorcycle gang members during club conflicts
This study examines the trends in and spatial distribution of recorded offending by Australian outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) affiliates at the onset of a territorial conflict between two clubs in the state of New South Wales. Results show an increase in recorded offending by OMCG affiliates involved in the conflict and based in the disputed territory. Comparable increases in recorded offending by these clubs were not detected in the areas surroun…
Predicting high-harm offending using machine learning
Risk assessment tools are used widely in the criminal justice response to serious offenders. Despite growing recognition that certain outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members and their clubs are likely to be involved in crime, particularly serious crime, this is not an area where risk assessment tools have been developed and validated. The nature of offending by OMCGs, and policing responses to OMCGs, requires a novel approach to risk assessment. Th…
Regulatory approaches to preventing organised crime among outlaw motorcycle gangs
Regulatory approaches to organised crime aim to minimise exploitation of the legitimate economy by offenders. Unlike criminal justice approaches, regulatory approaches prioritise prevention over enforcement. This study explores the impact of a regulatory approach to organised crime in Queensland which restricted outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members from working in certain industries. We exploit a delay in the implementation of these occupational…
Priority setting in early childhood development
BACKGROUND: Early childhood development (ECD) sets the foundation for healthy and successful lives with important ramifications for education, labour market outcomes and other domains of well-being. Even though a large number of interventions that promote ECD have been implemented and evaluated globally, there is currently no standardised framework that allows a comparison of the relative cost-effectiveness of these interventions. METHODS: We fir…
Qualitative exploration of PCPs’ mental health role for LGBT youth in Baltimore
LGBT youth experience disproportionate rates of mental health diagnoses, including depression and anxiety. Using qualitative interviews of LGBT youth (n = 14) and primary care providers (n = 12), we sought to identify whether mental health discussions with a primary care provider were perceived as overall beneficial. Most LGBT youth felt comfortable being asked about depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions by their primary care pro…
Criminal mobility of outlaw motorcycle gangs in Australia
The criminal mobility of outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members presents a significant challenge to Australian governments and police. Examining patterns of mobility can help to better understand the opportunity structures that underpin offending by OMCGs and to drive national collaborative responses to these gangs. This study examines the prevalence and patterns of criminal mobility in a sample of almost 4,000 OMCG members in more than 400 chapte…
Organised crime and criminal careers
A growing number of international studies have shown members of organised crime groups have different criminal career trajectories to volume crime offenders. This study analysed the recorded criminal histories of a sample of 3,007 individuals affiliated with known organised crime groups. Trajectory analysis revealed four distinct offending trajectories, differentiated by their onset, peak and frequency of offending. Consistent with overseas studi…
Early-career offending trajectories among outlaw motorcycle gang members
This study examines the criminal histories of outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members during adolescence and early adulthood to determine whether the profile of young members has changed over time. The recorded offence histories of three cohorts of members—those born between 1979 and 1983, 1984 and 1988, and 1989 and 1993—were compared. Seventy-eight percent of OMCG members across all three cohorts had at least one recorded offence between the ages…
Effects of outlaw motorcycle gang membership and the support needs of former members
Drawing on interviews with 39 former members of outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCGs), we identify consequences associated with leaving the club and the effects of membership experienced before and after leaving. This evidence is important in helping to inform efforts to promote and facilitate disengagement from clubs. While some members experienced adverse consequences from leaving the club, less hostile separations were not uncommon. Poor mental heal…

Australian outlaw motorcycle gang involvement in violent and organised crime
Using national data on the criminal histories of 5,669 known outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) members from 39 gangs, this paper explores the prevalence of violent and organised crime offending among Australian OMCGs. Violent and profit-motivated offending was common among OMCG members. One in four had been apprehended for a recent offence involving violence and intimidation, and one in eight for organised crime-type offences. Offending and associate…
Local government public space CCTV systems in Australia
Criminal histories of Australian organised crime offenders
This study analyses the criminal histories of Australian organised crime offenders. Most offenders associated with organised crime groups did not commit their first offence until adulthood; nearly one-third were aged 25 years or older when they committed their first offence. Offending was most common, and remained relatively stable, throughout their 20s and early 30s. Offending frequency gradually increased during this period, as did the seriousn…
Does CCTV help police solve crime
This study examines the impact of CCTV footage on clearance rates for crimes occurring on the rail network in New South Wales. Nearest neighbour matching was used to compare criminal matters with and without camera footage. Cases were matched on principal offence type, spatial and temporal characteristics and offence severity. Overall, 24.8 percent of matters where footage was requested were solved by police, compared with 21.0 percent of matters…
Young black MSM’s exposures to and discussions about PrEP while navigating geosocial networking apps
Young Black gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YBMSM) carry a disproportionate HIV burden perpetuated by exposure to sexual networks with higher untreated HIV prevalence and incidence. In Baltimore, these sexual networks include high utilization of geosocial networking apps (GSN-apps). Our prior work suggests these apps can be important access points for targeted interventions like PrEP. To inform online PrEP outreach we explored …

Context of First Same‐Sex Condom Use and Nonuse in Young Black Gay and Bisexual Males
Despite high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates among young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM), there are limited data about condom use during first same-sex (FSS). This study sought to understand socio-contextual factors of 50 YBMSM aged 15-19 years that influenced condom use during FSS. Condom use was influenced by individual, partner, and community factors. Individual factors-recent illness or sexually transmitted infections (STI)-p…

Evaluating crime prevention
The Australian Institute of Criminology has spent a number of years working with crime prevention agencies across Australia reviewing large-scale programs that involve the delivery of varying activities directed at the prevention of crime. Taken as a whole, this experience has shown that, despite good intentions and aspirations to evidence-based practice, both the level and quality of evaluations have been limited by several practical challenges.…
