  • Environment and hunting territories for Late Neanderthals in central Italy

Open Access•Juan Ochando, Federico Di Rita et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

The Mousterian sequence of Grotta dei Santi (central Italy) is dated to MIS 3. • Palynological study of hyaena coprolites reconstruct the vegetation landscapes. • The Late Pleistocene vegetation in the Grotta dei Santi shows temperate climatic conditions. • The regional pollen comparison constrained the Neanderthal presence in the GI-12. • Neanderthals did not abandoned the cave and the surrounding area for environmental stress. The Italian penin…

  • Insights into agricultural practices at the Phoenician site of Castro Marim between 7th-5th century BCE

Open Access•Roshan Paladugu, Alessandra Celant et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024

Castro Marim is an Iron Age site from the Algarve region, Portugal. The earliest evidence of settlement, from the Late Bronze Age, dates to the 9 th century BCE, with the Phoenician-Punic period dating from the 7 th to the 3 rd century BCE. This study focuses on the stable isotope analysis of plant and collagen of faunal remains to reconstruct cultivation and husbandry practices. Barley was the most abundantly cultivated cereal crop. The stable i…

    Open Access•Matthieu Ghilardi, J Revelles et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Referencias: 9

Two coastal areas located on the North-Western side of Corsica Island have been investigated to reconstruct their Mid- to Late-Holocene landscape evolution together with the history of human occupation. Particular attention has been paid to the study of shoreline migration and vegetation history alongside land-use. Three boreholes were drilled to a maximum depth of 4.20 m and laboratory work comprised the identification of molluscs and pollen/NPP…

  • Multidisciplinary study of the Lower Palaeolithic site of Cimitero di Atella (Basilicata), Italy

  • An Environmental and Climate History of the Roman Expansion in Italy

Open Access•Stanley Bernard, Seth Bernard et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2023•Citada por: 8

A first synthesis of available data for the period of Rome's expansion in Italy (about 400-29 b.c.e.) shows the role of climate and environment in early Roman imperialism. Although global indices suggest a warmer phase with relatively few short-term climate events occuring around the same time as the expansion, local data emphasize the highly variable timing and expression of these trends. This variability casts doubt on ideas of a unitary, histo…

  • The paleoenvironment and depositional context of the Sumerian site of Abu Tbeirah (Nasiriyah, southern Mesopotamia, Iraq)

Open Access•Luca Forti, Licia Romano et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The Sumerian culture flourished within the Tigris and Euphrates rivers floodplains and along their deltaic systems, which ca. 6000 yr were located ~250–260 km inland from the present Persian Gulf. Here, large floodplains and marshes were crossed by an intricate network of channels where several human settlements developed. In this paper, we describe in detail the paleoenvironmental context where the site of Abu Tbeirah (third millennium BC) devel…

  • The 4.2 ka BP Event in the Mediterranean region

Open Access•Monica Bini, Giovanni Zanchetta et al.•ARTICLE•Climate of the Past•2019

The Mediterranean region and the Levant have returned some of the clearest evidence of a climatically dry period occurring around 4200 years ago. However, some regional evidence is controversial and contradictory, and issues remain regarding timing, progression, and regional articulation of this event. In this paper, we review the evidence from selected proxies (sea-surface temperature, precipitation, and temperature reconstructed from pollen, δ1…

  • Tyrrhenian central Italy

    Open Access•Simon Stoddart, John Woodbridge et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 34

This paper compares changes in vegetation structure and composition (using synthetic fossil pollen data) with proxy data for population levels (including settlements and radiocarbon dates) over the course of the last 10 millennia in Tyrrhenian central Italy. These data show generalised patterns of clearance of woodland in response both to early agriculturalists and urbanism, as well as the specific adoption of tree crops and variations in stock g…

  • Sedimentology, faunal content and pollen record of Middle Pleistocene palustrine and lagoonal sediments from the Peri-Adriatic basin, Abruzzi, eastern central Italy

Open Access•Pierluigi Pieruccini, Silvia Ravani et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

A 25 m-thick outcrop section exposed at Torre Mucchia, on the sea-cliff north of Ortona, eastern central Italy, comprises a rare Middle Pleistocene succession of shallow-water and paralic sediments along the western Adriatic Sea. An integrated study of the section, including facies and microfacies analyses, and characterization of paleobiological associations (mollusks, fishes, ostracods, foraminifers and pollen), enable a detailed reconstruction…

  • The Tiber river delta plain (central Italy)

    Open Access•P Bellotti, Gilberto Calderoni et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 4

Geomorphologic, stratigraphic, faunistic, palynological and carbon isotope analyses were carried out in the area of the Tiber river mouth. The results depict a complex palaeoenvironmental evolution in the area of the Roman town of Ostia, ascertain the changes of the Tiber river delta over the last 6000 years and support a re-interpretation of some archaeologic issues. The wave-dominated Tiber delta evolved through three distinct phases. In the fi…

  • Holocene drought, deforestation and evergreen vegetation development in the central Mediterranean

    Open Access•Federico Di Rita, Donatella Magri•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 20

Pollen analysis from Lago Alimini Piccolo provides the first record of mid- and late-Holocene vegetation history of a coastal area in the easternmost region of southern Italy (Salento Peninsula). Terrestrial pollen taxa document expansions and declines of the Mediterranean forest, in relation to human activity and climate changes. Between 5200 and 4350 cal. BP a dense evergreen oak forest dominated the landscape; then a distinct opening of the fo…
