Understanding ideational fluency as a survival process
BACKGROUND: When students generate ideas, important inter-individual variance exists both in the quantity and the quality of ideas they are able to produce (e.g., perfectionists who have few highly creative ideas or mass producers who produce a lot of uncreative ideas). In educational psychology research on creativity, the relation between the quantity and quality of ideas has not been well understood, limiting progress in this area. AIMS: We con…

It must have been love … but it’s over now
This article examines the key factors behind the collapse of the Irish social partnership process in 2010 and looks at some of the broader implications that can be drawn. It categorizes the partnership process as being driven by extreme pragmatism, rather than ideological conviction, on the part of the main actors and looks at how the shifting positions of the state, labour and capital, as well as the focus on processes over outcomes, led to the …
Comparing Cost-Utility Estimates
BACKGROUND: A number of different measures can be used within cost-utility analyses, we compared results according to both the EQ-5D and SF-6D. METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted to compare 4 options for people with knee pain. Over the 2 year trial period, the change in cost to health-service was estimated, and both the EQ-5D and SF-6D were used to estimate the change in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Using a complete case analysis, …
When the working day is through
This article seeks to present a counter-case to the 'end of work thesis' advocated by writers such as Beck et al. It argues that work remains a significant locus of personal identity and that the depiction by these writers of endemic insecurity in the workplace is inaccurate and lacks empirical basis. The article draws upon case study data to illustrate how, across a range of workplaces, work remains an importance source of identity, meaning and …
Preparing for bushfires

Design/methodology/approach Survey data were collected from 280 residents in high bushfire risk areas and analysed using multiple regression analysis. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with a theoretical sample draw…

Conservatively managed tibial shaft fractures in Nottingham, UK
OBJECTIVES: To investigate longterm pain and disability subsequent to a tibial shaft fracture treated conservatively. DESIGN AND SETTING: Subjects who had sustained a tibial shaft fracture more than 27 years ago were compared with those who had not. SUBJECTS: 572 fracture patients (identified from the records of the plaster room) aged over 16 at the time of injury were contracted and were compared with 2285 randomly selected subjects matched for …

Four Text‐Mining Methods for Measuring Elaboration
When individuals engage in divergent thinking, they vary on their Elaboration, or the degree to which they explain and embellish their responses. Although Elaboration has been considered relevant to creativity research for decades, its measurement has remained under‐developed. Here, we leverage technical and methodological perspectives from the text‐mining literature to posit four methods for quantifying elaboration: Unweighted Word Count, Stopli…
