Employee Participation in the Management of Working Life
It is argued that the historical development of employee participation in the management of working life is a complex process in which three different institutional logics have been at play throughout the twentieth century in industrialized societies: professional communities, collective bargaining, and co-management. Even though the logics were constructed at different times in history, none of them is necessarily obsolete. But their importance …
Working conditions of temporary company-affiliated IT workers
This paper explores the relationship between temporary company affiliation and working conditions for a group of information technology workers. The problem is addressed through three competing discourses: a periphery discourse, a market discourse and a professional discourse. The analysis shows that the different discourses apply to different aspects of working conditions
Identity, Times and Work
The aim of this article is to analyse the construction of time as perceived by a group of IT workers. It is argued that two stories about working time have been socially constructed during the 19th and 20th centuries, not as an epochal phenomenon but as a multi-times phenomenon: a clock time story and a task-time story. A quantitative method is used in analysing the IT workers, which breaks with the traditional conception within research that a s…
Identity Work and Meaning Arena
A dominant sociological argument asserts that changes in working life and society in general have affected our identities, with the result of increased individualization and the decline of the "organizational man." The author is critical of this epochalist claim and argues that it is important to design an approach to analyzing the identities and telling the stories of the current transformation of work and identities that recognizes the processe…

Institutionalisering af medarbejdervalgte i danske virksomhedsbestyrelser og den sociale konstruktion af bestyrelsen som praktisk strategisk aktør
Institutionalisation of employee representatives on boards of directors and the social construction of the board as a practical strategic actor In this study we attempt to analyse how the implementation of employee representatives on Danish boards of directors transformed labour market relations, and how boards of directors developed integrative rather than aggregative decision making processes. The 1973 legislation granting employees of private …
Collective Decision Making
The focus of the article is on the dominating assumptions in theories of decision making and the relationship between decisions and change. This discussion is used to understand strategic decision making in Danish companies in which, since 1973, employees have been able to elect representatives to the board of directors. It is the authors' observation that employers and employees develop joint perspectives on the realities facing their company an…
The Social/Behavioral Construction of Employees as Strategic Actors on Company Boards of Directors
In this article, the authors try to develop a theoretical frame of reference to help us understand the social construction of employees as strategic company actors on boards of directors. In 1973, the Danish Parliament passed an act granting employees the right to elect two members to sit on a company's board of directors. The authors attempt to understand the processes by which employee representatives infused this institutional form with meanin…
Research in the Sociology of Organizations
Alternative Possibilities in the Sphere of Production
It is assumed that it is necessary to change the structure of ownership in order to establish alternative working conditions. The article deals with firms which are owned and controlled by their employees. A companson is made between the organizations of capitalist firms and producer co-operatives in four different respects: participation, learning processes; fundamental con tradictions; general responsibility. The article builds on empirical dat…
