  • Digitization for Cultural Heritage Conservation in Emergencies

    Open Access•Carmen Cano-Sola, Álvaro Solbes-García et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

The ChemiNova project—funded by the Horizon Europe programme and coordinated by the Universitat de València—demonstrates how digital innovation can transform cultural heritage conservation in the face of increasing climate-related emergencies. Through the integration of technologies such as augmented and mixed reality, AI-based analysis, and 3D modelling, ChemiNova will enable real-time monitoring and risk assessment of monuments, museum collecti…

  • Non-Invasive Use of Imaging and Portable Spectrometers for On-Site Pigment Identification in Contemporary Watercolors from the Arxiu Valencià del Disseny

    Open Access•Álvaro Solbes-García, Mirco Ramacciotti et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Referencias: 11

Imaging techniques have revolutionized cultural heritage analysis, particularly for objects that cannot be sampled. This study investigated the utilization of spectral imaging for the identification of pigments in artifacts from the Arxiu Valencià del Disseny, in conjunction with other portable spectroscopy techniques such as XRF, Raman, FT-NIR, and FT-MIR. Four early 1930s watercolors were examined using point-wise elemental and molecular spectr…

  • Recent Investigations on the Unique Maya Wall Paintings from Chajul (Guatemala)

Open Access•Jarosław Źrałka, Monika Banach et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios de Cultura Maya•2025

This article presents the results of interdisciplinary research encompassing conservation, archaeological excavations, ethnographic, ethnomusicological and historical studies on the Colonial murals documented in the Ixil Maya residences of Chajul (Guatemala). The Chajul murals are unique for several reasons. First, they were documented in what are now private family homes, whereas most examples of Colonial art in Latin America are found in church…

  • New insights into the composition of historical remedies and pharmaceutical formulations

Open Access•Francesca Caterina Izzo, Giulia Carolina Lodi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 70

The present paper reports one of the first studies on the identification of natural resins and balsams in modern era drug formulations. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to investigate the composition of ancient remedies and pharmaceutical formulations coming from the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, founded at the end of the seventeenth century by the Discalced Carmelites. The obtained results hig…

  • The Maya wall paintings from Chajul, Guatemala

Open Access•Jarosław Źrałka, Katarzyna Radnicka et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

The recent renovation of a house in Chajul in western Guatemala has revealed an unparalleled set of wall paintings, most probably from the Colonial period (AD 1524-1821). The iconography of the murals combines pre-Columbian elements with imported European components in a domestic rather than a religious setting, making them a unique example of Colonial-period art. Here, the authors present the results of iconographic, chemical and radiocarbon ana…

  • Polysaccharide remains in Maya mural paintings

Open Access•Núria Guasch-Ferré, José Luis Prada Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2019

A number of monosaccharides characteristic of plant gums were found in paint layers and preparation layers of samples of Maya mural paintings of 10 archaeological sites located in Campeche and Yucatan regions. This finding opens the question about the deliberate use of these organic polymers as additives for improving workability and mechanical properties in the preparation layer mortar and conferring cohesion to the pigments in the paint layer. …

  • Multi-technical approach for the characterization of polychrome decorative surfaces at Spanish Mission Churches in Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico)

    Open Access•Karla Muñoz-Alcocer, Laura Fuster-López et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2019

An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography – IRFC…

  • Characterization of color production in Xalla's palace complex, Teotihuacan

    Open Access•Carlos López-Puértolas, Linda R Manzanilla et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2019

A multi-analytical approach was used to characterize color remains from Xalla, a Teotihuacan palace complex (project Teotihuacan, Elite and Government. Excavations in Xalla led by Linda R. Manzanilla). Color samples were obtained from polished lithic instruments and pigment ores. Those samples were analyzed combining microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Our results coincide with previous studies in Teotihuacan, with the chromatic palette dis…

Visible spectra, composition from SEM/EDX and solid‐state electrochemical data are correlated for a set of 12 Maya Blue samples from different archaeological sites of Campeche and Yucatán (Mexico). In addition to indigo and dehydroindigo, indirubin and other possibly indigo‐type compounds can be detected in Maya Blue samples. Application of hierarchical cluster analysis techniques allows similarity relationships to be established between samples …
