  • Practitioner perspectives on informing decisions in One Health sectors with predictive models

    Open Access•Kim M Pepin, Keith M Carlisle et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

The continued emergence of challenges in human, animal, and environmental health (One Health sectors) requires public servants to make management and policy decisions about system-level ecological and sociological processes that are complex, poorly understood, and change over time. Relying on intuition, evidence, and experience for robust decision-making is challenging without a formal assimilation of these elements (a model), especially when the…

  • Novel mitochondrial haplotype of spotted-tailed quoll ( Dasyurus maculatus ) present on Kangaroo Island (South Australia) prior to extirpation

    Open Access•Alicia Grealy, Matthew C Mcdowell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Referencias: 9

Spotted-tailed quolls ( Dasyurus maculatus) – cat-sized, carnivorous marsupials – occupied Kangaroo Island (KI), South Australia, for over 50,000 years but became locally extinct following European settlement of the island in 1836. As the largest mammalian predator on KI when the Europeans colonised it, spotted-tailed quolls would have played a significant role in maintaining healthy ecosystem function. The reintroduction of spotted-tailed quolls…

  • DNA Extraction from Fossil Eggshell

    Open Access•Charlotte L Oskam, Michael Bunce•CHAPTER•Ancient DNA•2012

Avian eggshell fragments recovered from both paleontological and archaeological deposits contain a cache of well-preserved ancient DNA. Here, we describe an extraction protocol that has been optimized to maximize the recovery of ancient DNA from fossil eggshell and minimize the co-purification of PCR inhibitors. In this method, fossil eggshell fragments are powdered, then digested and heated to release DNA from the calcite matrix. The digest then…

  • An Aboriginal Australian Genome Reveals Separate Human Dispersals into Asia

Open Access•Morten Rasmussen, Xiaosen Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2011

Whole-genome data indicate that early modern humans expanded into Australia 62,000 to 75,000 years ago.

  • Molecular and morphological analyses of avian eggshell excavated from a late thirteenth century earth oven

  • Ancient human genome sequence of an extinct Palaeo-Eskimo

Open Access•Morten Rasmussen, Yingrui Li et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2010

We report here the genome sequence of an ancient human. Obtained from ∼4,000-year-old permafrost-preserved hair, the genome represents a male individual from the first known culture to settle in Greenland. Sequenced to an average depth of 20×, we recover 79% of the diploid genome, an amount close to the practical limit of current sequencing technologies. We identify 353,151 high-confidence single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), of which 6.8% hav…

  • The Farm Beneath the Sand' - an archaeological case study on ancient 'dirt' DNA

    Open Access•Martin B Hebsgaard, T Gilbert et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2009•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 25

It is probable that 'The Farm Beneath the Sand' will come to stand for a revolution in archaeological investigation. The authors show that a core of soil from an open field can provide a narrative of grazing animals, human occupation and their departure, just using DNA and AMS dating. In this case the conventional archaeological remains were nearby, and the sequence obtained by the old methods of digging and faunal analysis correlated well with t…
