Income, dental insurance coverage, and financial barriers to dental care among Canadian adults
Canadian adults report financial barriers to dental care, especially those of low income. These barriers appear to have negative effects with respect to dental visiting and oral health outcomes. For policy, appropriateness will be key, as clarity needs to be established in terms of what constitutes actual need, and thus which dental services can then be considered a public health response to affordability

Is the Child Oral Health Quality of Life Questionnaire Sensitive to Change in the Context of Orthodontic Treatment? A Brief Communication
The results provide preliminary evidence of the sensitivity to change of the COHQoL questionnaires when used with children receiving orthodontic treatment. However, the study needs to be repeated in different treatment settings and with a larger sample size in order to confirm the utility of the measure
Canadian Dentists' Opinions on Publicly Financed Dental Care
Dentists prefer a targeted effort at meeting public needs and are influenced in their opinions largely in relation to ideology. In order to move forward, policy leaders will need to devote some attention to the influence and complexity of public and private tensions in dentistry At the very least, public and private practitioners must come to appreciate each other's challenges and balance public and private expectations in public programming
On the Pediatric Oral Health Therapist
To ensure the success of the paediatric oral health therapist, US policy leaders will need to mitigate the challenges that degraded the viability of this form of service provision in Canada
Self‐Esteem and Socioeconomic Disparities in Self‐Perceived Oral Health
Psychosocial factors partly but do not wholly explain the socioeconomic disparities in self-perceived oral health in this population after controlling for tooth loss and denture wearing. Other variables need to be added to the models to increase their explanatory power
What Frames of Reference Underlie Self‐Ratings of Oral Health
The biomedical model and professional ideologies and values provide the main frames of reference that give meaning to self-ratings of oral health. Variations in the meanings of the self-ratings have some implications for the use of this item in quantitative studies, which warrants further investigation
What Do Older Adults' Global Self-ratings of Oral Health Measure
The results suggest that the referents that inform older adults' ratings of oral health are broadly similar to those that have been reported to inform their ratings of general health and differ across groups

Prevalence and Causes of Oral Injuries in a Population of Canadian Adults Aged 18 to 50 Years ‐ A Brief Communication
Oral and dental injuries occur throughout the lifespan, although the causes appear to vary according to the age at which they happen
School Performance Indicators as Proxy Measures of School Dental Treatment Needs
The study established the feasibility of using school-level school performance indicators as proxy measures of school-level dental treatment needs. School performance results were good predictors of urgent dental treatment in York Region elementary school children. Further studies are needed using data from other jurisdictions to determine the utility of educational indicators in oral health programs

A Comparison of the Costs and Patient Acceptability of Professionally Applied Topical Fluoride Foam and Varnish
Varnish applications were found to take less time and resulted in fewer signs of discomfort. These results support the use of fluoride varnish in caries prevention programs, especially for younger children
Identifying Children with Dental Care Needs
The targeted program was most effective at identifying children with dental care needs from disadvantaged backgrounds. However, any improvements in cost effectiveness achieved by targeting must be balanced against inequities in access to public health care resources
Barriers to Wellness Activities for Canadian Women With Physical Disabilities
Although there is a great deal of interest in women's health, research on the health and well being of women with disabilities has not increased. In this article we present internal and structural barriers to wellness activities experienced by women with disabilities. We also discuss women's actual and recommended strategies to address these barriers. Data were collected in six focus groups in urban and rural Ontario, Canada. The participants rep…

The study provides data to indicate that the P-CPQ is valid and reliable
Validity and Reliability of a Questionnaire for Measuring Child Oral-health-related Quality of Life
Oral-health-related quality of life measures that exist are designed for adults. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the CPQ 11-14 , a self-report measure of the impact of oral and oro-facial conditions on 11- to 14-year-old children. An item pool was generated with the use of a literature review and interviews with health professionals, parents, and child patients. The 36 items rated the most frequent and bothersome by 83 children were sele…
Risk Indicators for Periodontal Disease in a Remote Canadian Community—a Dental Practice‐based Study
The data indicate that the periodontal health of these patients is poor. Risk indicators or markers of poor periodontal health in the population studied included missing teeth, plaque scores, age, current smoking status, regularity of dental visits, and flossing frequency. This supports previous findings that behavioral factors play an important role in periodontal disease
General Health Status and Changes in Chewing Ability in Older Canadians over Seven Years
The results of this study indicate a marked increase in the prevalence of chewing problems in this older adult population over the seven-year observation period. Poorer general health at baseline increased the probability of the onset of a chewing problem and decreased the probability of recovery
Developing Short‐form Measures of Oral Health‐related Quality of Life
Because the content validity of short-form measures is always compromised, different short forms are required for different purposes and different patient populations. The regression short form developed by Slade (1997) is likely to be better when the aim is to discriminate, while the impact short form developed here may be preferable when the aim is to describe the oral health-related quality of life of populations or to detect change
Toothbrushing Competency Among High‐risk Grade One Students
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of two methods of dental health education (DHE) for improving toothbrushing competency among grade one students at high risk for dental diseases. Methods: Fifty elementary schools in the former city of North York, Ontario, Canada, were assigned to one of two groups. In one group, students received a classroom‐based DHE lesson that was reinforced by two small group sessions ( n =243). In the other group, st…
Response and Nonresponse Bias in Oral Health Surveys
Oral health surveys are undertaken to provide estimates of the dental health and behaviors of populations or population subgroups. However, the integrity of the data from sample surveys may be compromised by one or more sources of sampling and nonsampling error. An important source of nonsampling error is the failure to collect data from some of the individuals comprising the sample. Consequently, the response to a sample survey, and the directio…

Screening for disability in the inner city
A 10% sample of private households on the electoral register of the London borough of Lambeth was screened for disable persons aged 16 and over, using a postal questionnaire. After three mailings and individual follow-up of non-responders, 87% of the sample households returned questionnaires. Disability was defined in the screening questionnaire as functional limitations or activity restrictions consequent upon disease or impairment. The overall …
Estimating the prevalence of disability in the community
An estimate of the prevalence of physical disability in the community based upon a sample survey may be influenced by the sample design and the response to the method of data collection employed. In this paper we describe a postal survey of a sample of households in the London borough of Lambeth and the procedures used for calculating the influence of these factors on the estimate produced. These procedures can be used to adjust the estimate to t…

Response Trends and Nonresponse Bias in a Mail Survey of Oral and Facial Pain
While mail surveys offer a low-cost method for collecting health data, they have been unpopular because of concerns about low response rates and nonresponse bias. This paper examines the response to a mail survey concerning oral and facial pain and uses regression techniques to assess the degree and direction of nonresponse bias on estimated prevalence rates. The analysis shows that early and late responders to the survey differed in terms of soc…
